Questions about replacing power steering pump on 92 intercooled
OK, just looked at the floor jack. It's rated for 5000 pounds, I'll see if it can lift the truck using the crossmember.
EDIT: OK, the jack worked fine, I turned it back and forth, added fluid and so on. The steering turns easily now with the wheels on the ground, however the fluid is pretty "foamy" still, and there is a tiny bit of roughness at the left end of the travel of the steering wheel.
Also, will an oil feed line to the vac pump off of a '99 Cummins fit my '92 ?

Though the steering isn't totally smoothed out yet, I'm not losing PS fluid any more. There's still oil dripping off the bottom of the two pumps, though. I cleaned them with a dry rag, ran the engine some more, looks to be coming from the vac pump somewhere. So I guess I get to figure out how to reseal that now, too. Looks like I need, what, an impact wrench or gear puller to get the thing apart ?
Still dripping oil off of that vacuum pump. I started it up yesterday while working on some other of this truck's endless problems, and noticed that the top of the vac pump collects little puddles of oil the minute the motor is turned on. Examined it pretty carefully, and there isn't any leak above the vac pump, this is a result of some blown seal in there somewhere. But how would it get on TOP ?!?
I have the seal kit from Cummins, now I'm in the process of making some time to deal with it this week.
From what I've read, you need an impact wrench to pull the gear out of the vacuum pump ? Neither Schmucks nor Autozone nor NAPA rents those out any more.
Is there an alternate way to get the vacuum pump apart besides using an impact wrench ?
Then again, there are those used pumps that pop up on Ebay...

How about pulling that O-ring ? Do you just yank it out with a pair of vise grips or is it a more delicate operation ?
TIA.

All you have to do to replace the o-ring is pull the two halves of the pump apart, the shaft and rotor stay in the front half. A properly sized socket or piece of pipe is needed to drive the old seal out of the back end of the pump, and to drive the fresh seal in.

No idea where to get a bracket, Cummins probably sells them for $80. Maybe I'll adapt one from Lowes or something...
