Intercooled vs. non-intercooled

Hi Guys ! As you can see I'm new to this and need some help and info. I am looking for a 1st Gen because I like the body style and what they are. Anyways ! I have seen a few intercooled trucks and then your non intercooled trucks. Does it matter much the difference I/C vs. NON I/C ? I need the truck to pull around 8k and sometimes more. Not everyday but weekly.

An intercooler cools the otherwise heated compressed air, making it denser. This dense air allows for better combustion, hence more horsepower. If you're going to tow, it's a must have. Others have towed with a non I/C set up but EGT's have to be closely watched. If you're going with aggressive fuel settings, an I/C will be of great help.

Both have same power levels stock. Both will pull fine a stock levels. I hauled a 7500 pound tractor on a trailer behind my stock 89 and could floor it all day long with no problems. That was with a stock 727 auto as well. Don't expect a hot rod truck at stock levels. They haul fine but are not the fastest things on the road.

Richie, I didn't even think about stock levels.

For what you are planning to do with the truck it doesn't much matter which one you get.

When stock, the non-intercooled trucks tend to run stronger.

I was going to pull a 18 open car trailer with a 1967 Dodge Coronet on it around here in Ohio. And hopefully down the road maybe do a little playing with the hp and tq numbers.

Not to change the subject but how hard is it to turn a non I/C into a I/C ?

you can get a snow or equal water/meth inj syst. and just use distilled water. that will keep the egts down the cheapest and simplest. use some meth if you need more power [if your trip is going to be hilly this week]. much easier than retrofitting an ic or water/air ic. good 1st upgrade after turning up the pump a little. no matter where you end up with mods, it's still viable. yup.

Non intercooled trucks have less to go bad and better automatics trannies then the intercooled trucks in my mind. Not only that but a stock non intercooled truck will pull like a bear compared to a stock intercooled truck.

They all had the same 5 speed from 89-93 but in 89-91 NON intercooled trucks had the 727 3 speed automatic with 3.07 gear ratios which is a bulletproof setup.

intercooled trucks had a the A518 with o/d which is nice but the tranny gets hot and causes a loss of power when towing due to the stock crappy torque converter.

Id recommend getting a 2WD Dually NON intercooled first gen with the 727 auto or a 5 speed. Make a good tow rig and could be fun in the future when you start the mods. HOpe this helps... Brandon

I would rather have a non-IC engine and then add the inter-cooler.

The non-IC just seem to be better all around, quicker to start and more powerful.

What do you mean quicker to start?

I need a 4x4 because I do a little off road work with my dad getting logs for lumber once and a while and then hauling the wood from the mill to his place.

I want a 5spd. but I know they are really really hard to find !
