question about oil pressure

my oil gauge has always read on the low side. It seems to be not reading my oil pressure well. The gauge at idle sometimes reads that I have absolutely no oil pressure at all. Basically what I want to know is 2 things. at idle what should my oil pressure be at? and at WOT what should it be at roughly?
I just wanna rule out the oil pump real quickly here. I don't want to replace my engine because I assumed it was the sender or sensor or whatever.

That said, if it turns out the oil pump is fine, what are the part numbers for that oil pressure sensor or sender thingy? that is known to not work right

I wanna get this dealt with asap of course!

Thanks in advance.

The only way to know for sure is a mechanical gauge. There is an extra port on the oil filter housing.

Before Bypass filter 25 idle and 55 cruise hot, now 5 psi less. I expected that though because the Bypass filter is just a "controlled leak"
My wifes Jeep has less than 5 psi at idle, and has forever.
When Landy was alive, we had several conversations about oil pressure. He felt that "some" at idle was sufficent.

Minimum specs per Cummins are 10 psi at idle and 30 psi at rated RPM (2600 for our engines).

Like Thunderhog said - "some."

good to know. I guess it doesn't matter to much so long as oil is getting pumped at idle?

I have had a lot of problems with my oil pressure gauge too. I finally got a sender that works, but every once in awhile it will still do funky stuff. I just put a mechanical gauge in.

Does anyone know what p.s.i. the marks on the factory gauge correspond to? My oil pressure gauge used to read near the higher mark, then I inadvertantly broke the sender switch and bought a replacement at Advance Auto and the gauge now hovers around the lower mark. "Made In China" maybe?

From the automotive side is 10PSI per 1000RPM. Sounds like a safe bet for all our coal burners...
