pyro readings (how long?)
pyro readings (how long?)
Hi guys I have been taking my crewcab conversion for some quick runs around the block and bursts down the highway to work out the bugs from the swap (ended up replacing the crew cab frame as it was really rotten). Anyway I have had the truck up to the point where the thermostat opened but I am yet to see my pyro gauge move. It starts at 300, how hard do I need to push it to get a reading? I took a heat gun to it before I installed it and it seemed to work but now I am thinking maybe it isn't sticking far enough into the exhaust stream to show a reading.
Your pyro should read pretty much instantly. Mine will begin moving as soon as I start the engine up and it climbs just by putting it in gear. Sounds like you have something wrong. IT could very well be that you do not have your probe sticking into your manifold (something easy to check). Mine at idle in N will read about 225F. In gear, it climbs up to about 350F. When I put my foot in it, I climb up to 1250F.
Perhaps a ground issue? Does your gauge read 0 before you start then 300 when you start it? IF so, check that probe. Does the gauge behave erratically? If so, look for loose connections or a bad ground.

If it's sitting at 300, something's wrong electrically. It would get at least as high as 600 degrees just touching the manifold. Either the gauge is bad or you hooked something up wrong.
It actually sits below 300 when its cold but the lowest reading on the gauge is 300. the gauge I bought was a isspro one and only has the two wires that hook up to the probe(red and yellow) from the gauge, the only place to put twelve volts to is the bulb in the gauge. It worked with a heat gun on the bench but I think that maybe I should put it deeper into the manifold. The instruction that I got said to install it .300 to .700 deep inside. It is definitly that deep.

You are missing your signal amplifier box. The probe should go to a box that has several wires going to it ... two from the probe, 12V, and wires two the gauge. You apparently did not get all of your kit. Just hooling the wires from the probe to the gauge will get you nothing.

I have the same Isspro pyro with ONLY the 2 wires and no amplifier box and it works fine.
I think the gage needs 12v to run....don't remember exactly. I'll have to try to dig up my instruction sheet.

edit....maybe not the SAME gage as mine will read below 300, but no amplifier box.
I installed a pyro that was purchased at a big truck dealer. I believe it is Stewart Warner. there are only 2 wires and no power wires. the gauge works on micro voltage generated by heat. You can take a nearly dead double A battery and touch it to the 2 wires, it should peg the meter. If the meter moves than your problem is in your probe. If it doesnt move than it is in the lead wire or gauge. There is positive and negative lead so when you put a battery on it, it may peg downward, turn the battery around and it will peg the other direction. Again it is best that you dont use a new or strong battery.
Good luck

I am fairly sure I don't need the amplifier box as I did make it move with a heat gun on the bench. What I would realy like to know is how hard to you need to run your truck to see the gauge show higher than 300 . I really haven't run the truck up any long hills and the weather isn't hot so maybe I will just have to wait as the truck is supposed to go for paint tomorow and am trying to avoid getting pulled over cause there are no mirrors, bumpers, wipers installed until after paint. Thanks for the replies

Grant,
You are correct there are only two wires. No 12 volt connection needed for the pyro only for the light bulb in the gauge. Check all of your connections and make sure that none of the wires are broken. As the other have said the gauge should respond immediately.

Running thru the gears "moderately" should get you to 800 even with a stock engine...

Is the connection for the probe shielded? Should have come with shrink tube. Make sure there isn't any bare area touching. Is the probe touching the bottom of the manifold? It should be suspended. Just guessing here, but if it was bottomed, maybe it expanded with heat and broke up? Like the guys said, no electrical hook up other than the light bulb, for my Isspro.
