Pump tweaking

Hi,

I installed my bigger injectors and now I am trying to adj. the pump. I had to turn the pump down from where I had it when I was running the stock injectors because it smoked quite a bit. I don't want to smoke at idle.

So I turned the main fuel screw on the back out. I turned the AFC cone so the pin is on the biggest dia. at idle. The top screw was all the way out already.

Now it doesn't smoke at idle. So one of my questions is. Will turning in the main fuel screw increase smoke at idle?

It seems to me the best thing for me would be to modify the AFC cone so that at idle the pin is forward and then have a very big cut in the cone so the pin move back alot on boost.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Dean

If you have POD injectors, they may haze at idle. I have DDP stage 4s with the pump maxed out and it doesn't haze at idle.

To keep low end smoke down, back off the starwheel and back the smoke screw all the way out. I had to do this from when I went from a tweaked pump with stock injectors (trying to fuel as fast as possibly) to the DDP injectors (trying to delay fueling to avoid as much smoke as I can).

I also did back out the star wheel a lot. The guy at New Era said his injectors are EDMed. I have never seen how much POD's smoke. I actually haven't seen many modifyed Cummins at all, so I have nothing to compare my smoke to.

So how is your cone turned? Woop I just noticed that you have the Old Smoky pin

Thank you

When I think PODs, I think black smoke that is thick as tar . Maybe it's because I've seen wannadiesel's avatar pic?

Dean, you can help the idle haze by advancing the timing. Changing to thinner washers under the injectors may help as well. If the custom 370's you have are modeled after 2nd gen 370's, the pattern is not so good and the thinner washers will help.

The fuel settings will not affect idle haze. If the truck is idling at 800 RPM, it takes the same amount of fuel to do that no matter where the fuel screw is set.

EDM does not necessarily mean clean.

Thanks for your help. I have no idea what the injectors are based on. I got the impression that they are stock injectors that are made bigger.

how much smoke are you talking about ? Is the truck warmed up ? My injectors will put off a haze at idle until warmed up and then the haze is gone. I had to bump the timing up a little also. I'm running the old smokey pin too.

Well with the truck warm and the pump turned all the way up it would smoke a lot at idle and every where else. It was too much for me. My exhast pipe dumps down right after the muffler and smoke would rise up from under the truck. I really don't have anything to compare my smoke too. It was more than stock but way less than one of those tractor pullers

With the pump turned down it doesn't smoke much at all. So now I just have to get the right settings so that it doesn't smoke at idle but puts more fuel in on boost.
