VE pump tweaking help.

Well a couple of you might already know that I am just getting into bombing my beloved first gen, and I have gotten around to having a free day to wrench. I have had the cap off of my full fuel screw for a couple days now and have been weary of touching it.

So today I go to mess with it, and i loosen the lock nut very very little and crank the screw in and thus tightened the lock nut back up. Then I go to start my truck and it will not start. So I get back under the hood and turn the screw back to the original position, and it wont start yet again.

I am in no real hurry to get anywhere fast but some input would be nice on this, as I am somewhat new to tweakin the pump.

In the meanwhile I will be searching through the forum to see if anyone else has had this difficulty.

Thanks,
-Jeremy

Check both lines on the shutdown solenoid. There should be two of them on there, and they'll need to be attached or the truck won't start because the solenoid is closed.

Red face Fixed problem

I had accidentally knocked the wire connector off of the solenoid and JUST now noticed it on the 20th drip from computer to engine bay.

So yeah. Back to tweakin the pump, just gotta remember to check that wire next time before jumping to any conclusion thinking I went and had a big problem

Dont forget, that when you turn that fuel screw in, you risk a (runaway condition) when you revv the throttle, Please remove the air intake from the turbo, and find a suitable piece of wood to put infront of the turbo that will stop the air from entering the turbo, as i have read, the IC trucks rarely will have runaway, but better on the safe side, Now go turn it up as much as you can!!!!, and remember to give it a good quick rev before you button it up and drive it! Your hand will not stop the air, Not even as it eats your fingers, No will turning off the key!!!
I turned mine till runaway, shut her down with a 1/8" metal sheet, and backed the fuel screw out 1 turn, checked again, and all is well!
Peter.

I thought it was the solenoid wire . Glad you got it running, and make sure you have something ready to stop a runaway. I'm one of the unfortunate ones who can't get a pump to runaway from me .

In case you go to wander'in . . . . . as you turn that fuel screw in, you'll most likely see an immediate improvement in full throttle performance. Where do you stop?

Watch you pyro. The stock maximum sustained EGT is 1250*F (As read pre-turbo). That's a working truck pulling all day long up steep hills with the maximum gross vehicle weight.

On the other hand . . .

You can run that boy on in some more (Barring a run-away condition as described above). I did a forum poll not too long ago asking where folks draw the line with EGTs ~ EGT's Where do you draw the line? (Link).
About 47% of those who participated run 1300*F or below. The others run much higher with a handful who don't know where it's at cause the guage stops at 1500*F Those higher temps are for a much shorter run (stop-light racing and such).

Hope this helps.

The way i adjust the full power is to turn it in until the idle just starts to increase, then give it a quick snap of the throttle up to about(1200) rpm's to see if it drops back down normally, if it drops quickly i will turn the screw in a little more, i do this until it just starts to idle down slow, then back the screw out about 1/2 turn. or until it idles down normally seems to work for me. i was also one of the unfortunate ones who couldnt get my pump to runaway until i removed the screw and welded a little more material on the end (about a1/8 inch then ground down and polished) now it will runaway.

Wow, that's radical. Is that basically what is going on with these other fuel pins I hear about, Bullydog, whatnot?

I think that you are taking about the fuel pin, not the full power screw.whole different thingy.

Well I noticed some improvement on my lunch run just now. Was waiting at the stop light and a dmax, billowing smoke none-the-less pulls out of the gas station and gets next to me. First thing I notice is he is SMOKING at idle (well actually first thing I noticed was his ugly Banks sticker, and his huge exhaust tip). So I am thinking, "this guy is going to try to just lay the smack down on me". Sure enough, I guess he wasnt thinking that, and I punched it right as light went green. I was 2 truck lenghts ahead of him before he laid into it, so it was more of just a shock and awe. I was turning right after the signal and he was going straight, so I glanced over and saw him giving a heads up .

I know for a fact though he had huge amounts of power in that thing as compared to mine, but heck, I launched, he didnt. Case closed .

Time to crank the bad boy in another turn or two, gotta find me a board first

Sweet Nuke...I love "SLEEPER" stories such as yours. I hope to embarrass a few powerjokes and dura-cracks here in the near future.

Man some crazy lady in this 7.3 that was loaded to the hilt with off road stuff (looked like a chase vehicle) just ripped by me (im on a 1 way street) while I was sitting in my garage. I heard her coming for a block then saw her take off. Truck had to have had some extra HP n TQ with all those stickers on it . Really though it smoked hard when she took off from the stop sign. Its people like that who intimidate me (women driving ferds) .

As for the guy in the Dmax, we all know he could have taken me, and from the looks of his rig, he had more than just the banks kit! (As it was smoking heavily at idle). Just caught him by suprise and by the time I was about 1 1/2 truck lenghts ahead of him, he realized what was going on and by that time it was too late .
