NEW GUY "Tweaking the pump"

I know I need to get some gauges but can I do a "Little" tweaking without gauges. I'm leaving on a trip to pick up 2 cars in SC and want as much power as possible to go over the "Mountains". I hate doing 20MPH up a grade. But I also understand that I do not want the EGT to melt me down. I do not have an EGT gauge. Can I just turn the T25 screw on the top of the pump 1 full turn and turn the full power screw at the back of the pump 1 full turn also?

Or what can I do safely right now without gauges.

My truck does have a 16cm turbo and boost gauge. My top speed coming home to Indian from Denver pulling to large pontiacs was only 75mph going down hill. It feels like its govenoring out. I can floor it and it will not go any faster even down hill. My boost will hit 25 floored. It has an AT. The pump was rebuilt 2 years ago. I see the rebuilder has put paint on the adjustment screws so I don't think anyone has already tweaked it. The only smoke I get is after coasting for a bit and getting back hard on the throttle. Like coasting downhill and flooring it to get up the next grade.

Thanks for all your help so far. I'll bet I have read 10hrs on this site so far.

I also read that I can take my injectors out and clean them with parts cleaner. Do you think this would help? I'm assuming I have the 7mm stock injectors.

From what I gather is I dunno it sounds like the previous owner of your truck ran it hard and put it up wet on several occasions. Even for a auto thats seems weak. One other area we have not touched yet on this topic is your transmission? could it be starting to slip? how old is it? how old is your transmission fliter/fluid? and whens the last time the bands were adjusted?

The screw on the top will not help you pull harder, it only adds more fuel at launch. If the pump was set up totally stock, I would say 3/4 turn on the power screw shouldn't cause a melt down. But I don't know where they set it so your taking a chance. But it sounds to me like they set it up de-fueled so it (the pump) will live longer. But you posted you make25lbs of boost. This isn't stock. I would spend the money and get a guage for EGTs and rest easy. I would make sure the eccentric is set to max fuel, this is a way to get more power without fear of meltdown
Watch your temp guage and if it climbs up too far, slow down.
I know this sounds lame but if I give you advice and you melt the motor, you will send me hate mail for the rest of my life.

You say it only goes 75mph downhill? Is your O/D working?

Unloaded you should be fine, my pump is up, and have never been over 1200. Loaded, especially with hills, could make all the difference in the world. You have a boost, your half way there with the primary gauges. Also, your idle will rise when you turn the pump up. This means it will take a few more moments for the turbo to cool at shut-down. Without a pyrometer, your gambling on shortening the bearing life of the turbo. Probably $350 min to rebuild, as long as it is still within tolerance, then double that. Much cheaper to get a gauge. The gauges help fight the boardom on long drives too.
I was also wondering about the tranny issue, and make sure your getting full range with the throttle.
Don

Oh, and try searching for info on fuel additives. A couple double strength doses may be all you need instead of pulling the injectors.
