Pump Timing

Hey everyone,

I have a quesiton relating to the timing gear for the injection pump. Is there a mark that it should line up with on the camshaft gear or can it be moved to match the pump keyway with the pump mounted to the truck? The pump is timed and locked to match TDC #1 on the truck. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Matt

I believe you want the "E" and "O" on the cam gear, and pump gear lined up....I'm going off memory hear so I might have the letters wrong.

I know there are pics of it somewhere in the archives if you dig a little.

Don't forget the mark on the timing cover case

Did you remove the gear from the case? If not you just need to turn your motor to top dead center and stick the pump on

Yeah, I have to keep that mark in mind for mounting the pump. I had the pump gear off but put it back on in the same spot I took it off. I adjusted all of the valves and made sure the truck was on TDC #1 at the end. If the pump is timed at TDC #1 for the truck and the keyway doesn't match up, do I just turn her over a little bit to compensate or what I had though of was just pull the gear off and put it on so the keway would match up. I just don't know how vital the pump gear is for "timing" to the camshaft. I would think it isn't terribly important as it is essentially just a drive for the pump as long as the truck and pump are set for TDC

I would not adjust the gear...you will either retard, or advance the total timing by doing this. The IP does not need to be exactly at TDC...in fact it doesn't need any special timing at all. Unlock the main shaft and rotate the pump to line up with the key way in the gear.

What do you mean? The ip needs to be timed to inject fuel at the right moment to each cylinder, no?

I think what he is saying is it's not necessary to set the pump and motor to tdc. If you haven't moved the gear just unlock the pump turn the shaft to where it lines up with the key way and install it. Match the timing line on the pump with that on the case and hook it all up. You can fine tune the timing by rotating the pump.

I've installed three pumps this way with no problems

I mean you don't need any special pump timing. I have torn about a number of IP, resealed them, and put them back together. I just line up the keyway with the mark on the front of the pump, as ClassA4x4 was asking about, and install.

Some people think they can be 180* or so off on the pump timing, or that they need to be on a special cycle on the IP, but I have never had an issue.

I've done it without lining anything up. Pulled the pump, resealed it, line the key back up with the key way and reinstalled. I may have gotten lucky but it's worked for me.

I can't help thinking more about this and I finally figured it out.

That mark IS the alignment mark for the timing at tdc. The pump has more tilt to it than I had thought, so that when the IP is mounted that mark on the face of the pump is at 6:30 when facing it. That corresponds to the 5:30 on the gear drive looking at it from the back.

Qed!

That works, Ive done it too, as long as the gear and pump shaft dont move in the process. The Shaft can be locked by removing that washer tab and tightening the lock bolt. Also I marked the crank damper for double checking later if the crank moved or not.

I was just curious about that mark on the face of the pump.

I did the same thing 4x4. I was looking at it for a few minutes wondering how in the heck it was going to work until it dawned on me that the pump is rotated clockwise to mount it to the timing case . It happens to the best of us. It doesn't hurt to ask the questions before hand though, just to get some input to make sure we have all our ducks in a row.
