Timing marks and Barring issues

I need some help with the timing gears on my truck. To start with I removed the pump because Istripped the upper bolt when I was trying to put in a 3200 governor spring. After that my intention was to remove the front cover andinstall a Killer Dowel Pin kit (good thing I did pin was about to fall out) andline up the timing marks. At that momentI didn't realize there were dozens of freaking letters and marks on the gears. So what letters or marks line up the Crank-to-Cam and the Cam-to-Pump?

Also I have my barring tool in the engine and I cannot spinthe darn thing over to save my life, is there something I need to do (it's outof gear, and the clutch was depressed, the injectors are still in as well). It almost feels like it's going to strip outthe fly wheel.

might be helpful to know what it is... 91 W350, non I/C, 5speed 4x4.

please help!

Has the engine spun recently? Was it running? Is there a chance that the tdc pin is pushed into its hole? Does the engine turn when you bump it with the starter?...Mark

it was running great when I took off the pump and front cover, and I already checked the pin. I will try bumping the starter and see what happens. Thanks

Did you lock the pump? Don't use starter if you did, you'll be buying a new pump then.

Good thought, that would also make turning the engine hard. Do the gears seem to be all in place, without binding?...Mark

the pump is still off, just put the balancer back on and was able to muscle the motor over.. Just need to figure out what marks to line up since the TDC pin looks to be broke

Thrashing cows hit this one right on the head. Awesome post. But yeah, the cam gear timing mark will line up with the "E" on the IP timing gear.
