Preventive Maintence - Getrag

What kind of preventive things could I do with my getrag while its out. I don't think I could rebuild it myself nor do I think it needs it but I thought maybe I should check some things out. Any ideas?

the screws that are on the shift tower need to be sealed.....if thay are leaking, the shift tower where it bolts up to the case

Any place that you see a leak fix it while it simple to do.

Check the output shaft for exsesive play(posible front bearing problems)....mine was tight or vary little play!

Any leaks? I opened the top on mine and made a top cover gasket out of some gasket paper because my top cover was leaking. If no leaks, put it back together!

How much if any free play should there be on the input and output shafts?

I don't have any spec to give you but if the input shaft can be moved a lot say....hm....a 1/4 of and inch, back and forth you might want to take the coller off(what the throw out bearing rides one) and see how the bearing on the input shaft looks.

The 'rag is setup with bearing preload. I'm looking up the specs right now, but I've got to think even a loose, worn out unit would still have .003-.005 preload, meaning no shaft play...unless there's a shot bearing, of course. Sounds like you've got a decent unit, so I'd say just run it

There should be no play whatsoever on either shaft. The trans is built with preload. If you can move the input shaft around the input bearing is toast.

The input bear has some up and down play so I've decided that im gonna replace it. I see the 4 bolts that hold it on but does the top cover need to come off to get it out?

Yeah, you pretty much have to tear the whole thing down to get at it.

huh that sounds kinda in-convienient. I pulled the cover off and the race will come out but the shaft won't. The race doesn't look too bad it doesn't have any pit marks or anything and doesn't have a groove. The bearing looks like it has some pit marks on the cage but not the actual rollers
