Power steering pump full of foam

Cold this morning when I went to start the truck. Got it fired and heard the power steering pump moan like it need fluid. Pulled it into shop and noticed it had a leak. Pop the hood and it looks like it had spit fluid out the top. Any thoughts Thanks n advance

Foam is air, it's getting air from some where. Usually you won't see this on the sending side. It would be the return side. Sending would cause fluid to be dripping.

As a rule, if the unit wasn't low and it got the foam, you have air getting in on the return side, look for a split, crack, rub, etc.

It will do the same thing though if the unit had a slow leak and it got too far down on the fluid level.

Barring finding a leak in the return line, get used to the idea that a high pressure seal on the pump itself has let go inside the tin-can (housing) and is aerating the fluid.

I take it that this is a common problem then. I've had several 24 valve cummins. This is my first 12. I'll check for leaks tomar. Thanks for all the advice

It's virtually the same system except the 24v has two return lines into the reservoir.
