Is it possible to just buy injector nozzles for 92 ?

So I'm gradually working through my new old truck...

Replaced oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter. Ran a few tanks of B20 spiked with a little fuel injector cleaner before I changed the fuel filter, too.

Adjusted valve lash...good and tight, .10 and .20 feelers fit, but you have to really push them in.

But it still kind of has a slight "chug chug" sound to it at idle if that makes any sense. Maybe that barely noticeable lugging sound at idle is normal for the Cummins 5.9 for all I know, these are new to me. Runs fine enough, but when I compare it to a friend's 91 non-intercooled 6BT, it just doesn't idle as smooth or strong, nor does it put out as much power. Drove both, same tranny.

So I figured what the hell, the thing has about 250,000 miles on it, maybe the injectors are starting to get a little tired.

Is it possible to just buy the nozzles for these and replace them, as opposed to shelling out $400 or more for a set of 6 injectors ?

Back when I ran a 6.2 GM/Detroit...slow turd, I know...I replaced it's injector nozzles. Got 'em from RockAuto. It wasn't that difficult at all. Ran great, but it had to go. I wanted a Cummins.

So why when I look on the internet here, are only whole injectors offered for the 5.9 Cummins ?

If I'm stuck buying whole injectors, what's the best bang-for-the-buck ? Keep in mind, this economy is killing me, like many other folks.

TIA.

Sean,

I don't know what the prices are in Oregon but, it's around $50 to $60 here for each injector to clean and pop test, if that's what you're looking at. For about a $100 or so more, you could have yourself and new set of Bosch 190's and step things up a notch. Just a thought.

Aloha~

nope, thats not really that steep.

their clean running efficient good power making injectors. Very nice upgrade.

If your looking for dirty smokey good cheap power then POD's are ok, but i would'nt recommend them

Personally I think the injectors archer39 has are the best for the money. 435's they're called from coal train diesel performance $500ish and they're 5x14.... ddp4's are 5x13's...... They may not run as clean as DDP4's but they will make a little more power.

5x.014 435 injectors > DDP4's .......they're both considered around a "80hp injector"

Your friend's 91 non i/c feels like its making more power because it kinda is .LOL

They have way faster spooling exhaust turbo housing then your 92 has so the power comes in quicker with minimal lag, and non i/c trucks had more factory timing and pretty big injectors in them stock,

What your 92 does'nt have going for it is the "lagmaster" exhaust housing, ditch that and get say a 12cm (no towing hot egt's, super spooling) or a 16cm (towing and good egt's. good spool) exhaust housing is your choice. that alone will click up the seat-o-pants HP meter.

So changing out the exhaust housing alone makes a big difference...where is a good place to pick up one of these exhaust housings on the cheap ? Used is fine by me. Which do you prefer ?

OK, so I'm looking around at what's for sale. PDR has the 16cm housing for $165, that's about the cheapest I've seen. Maybe one of you guys has one laying around unused you want to sell ?

This is a simple bolt-in mod for a 1992 ? I take it what I have on there is non-wastegated ?

From the Coaltrain Diesel site:

For your Cummins we offer the following:

1st Generation

* 5x.012 for $375. These give approximately 80-100 additional HP.
* 5x.014 for $500. These give approximately 140 additional HP.

He's gonna need some air!

SeanB23,

I have an intercooled 5 speed truck with the 16 housing and I'm pretty happy with it. It spools pretty good and tows heavy without EGT issues even with the PODs. It's a huge improvment over the lagmaster 21. What you could do that will help for cheap is look for an 18.5 housing. Lots of guys have those laying around and while not as quick as a 16 it's still worlds better. Personally, if you are going to tow or have plans for ANY injector up grade, skip the 12 because you'll just be changing it later. My $.02.

As for the grumpy idle, take a look in the sticky about advacing the timing. It's easy and free and will get you a little more snappy sound and help on the top end.

I have their (coaltrain) injectors and had no problems with them in the 4-5 months that they were installed. Good economical injector.
