Piston LP Spring Problems

Guys,

I removed the cap where the fuel line goes into the LP about 3 weeks ago to see if the little screen might have been stopped up as I was fighting a loss of power issue. Everything was good, so I re-installed it in what I thought was the same way it came apart.

Yesterday, wanting th plumb in a clear piece of hose to check for air in my supply line, I removed the cap again to find the spring on both ends wore down pretty good.

I have a FP gauge and never noticed a change in it, but I guess I either installed it incorrectly 3 weeks ago, or its been that way since the install of the LP 2 years ago and I just noticed it. Either way, I have 2 questions:

Which way is the proper direction to install the spring - tapered end toward the engine or away from the engine?

Should I buy a new spring and if so does anyone know the part number?

Thanks!

I've called around to 3 different Cummins shops here in town and everyone says they cannot see an exploded view of the LP to order the spring because I don't have and Engine Serial #. Problem is the Piston LP's did not come on our trucks standard, so giving them my serial # is no help. Am I left to have to buy a completely new pump to get the spring?

OK, I called Mark at PDR because I respect his opinion and direction. I emailed him a copy of the pictures above and he said it appears to be normal wear to him. Can anyone confirm this to be normal with what they have seen from their springs? That is if you have ever removed it. Thanks!

I have not had mine apart but that wear does not look scary to me. I'd run it.
