Over Drive

Hey I was wondering if any First Gen owners with the old 727 automatic and non-locking torque have installed an aftermarket overdrive unit. I am thinking of doing this myself. Any info would be good, cost, mileage, drivability. Thanks

I have a gear vendors O/D on my wifes truck (4WD) and IMO for the money you would spend on a GV unit you could get a A518 tranny with O/D and you would be money ahead...
I am not that impressed with it, However i didn't install it and i don't know the milage on it, and don't know how it has been treated, cause it does make some funny noises if you forget to turn it off and back up,,
GV was very happy to send me a manual for it and i just havn't had a chance to work on it yet...
I was planning on upgrading my tranny in my project and using my 518 to put in my wifes truck and using a pressure switch to accuate the O/D...
So keep researching and find what will work best for your application

wingnuts, you could probably make a switch that automatically kills the gv when your reverse lights come on, thereby stopping the crunchy munchies...

I guess the GV overdrive uses a cone style clutch system. They do wear out. I had to replace mine. Reverse was chattering and slipping. I thought it was the tranny so I had that replaced. It was the gear vender.
