OK..Metal shavings in VE pump....
Well with all the trouble I've been having trying to get RAE running after resealing the pump, I might have finally found the problem. The small spring off the fulcrum lever.....see pic...the pin below the top hat and spring is where the missing spring should go.
So I went fishing today, advice from Wannadiesel , hopping to catch the missing spring from down inside the body of the pump...got skunked. But did pull up a fair amount of fine metal shavings.
So I sucked out as much diesel out of the pump as I could and then used a small light to get down into the pump and look around. Still no spring, but there is a fair amount of metal shavings sitting down in the bottom of the pump now. I know they weren't there when I resealed the pump, I gave everything a thorough checking as it came apart.
So with all those shavings I guess out comes the pump for a complete tear down and cleaning. I guess I'll need to find either a replacement spring, or a complete fulcrum lever assembly.

I managed to lose that blasted idle spring when I put my 366 in. I could only get it to run if I set the idle around 1200 rpm, if I set the idle where it should have been everytime I put it into gear it would die. Good ole DTR helped me with that one. As for the metal shavings, that really doesn't sound good, especially if they weren't there when you resealed it the first time. You didn't do any other tinkering with it while you were figuring out problems?
Haha what the heck, where does your governor spring go jimbo? Something doesn't look right with that

Oh I misunderstood, I thought he was missing the idle spring, I re-read and he thinks he is missing a spring below it. Yeah I don't think there is a spring there either thrashingcow. I don't recall seeing it on my governor spring install

I'm thinking that if that light little spring dropped down inside it may have gotten ground up and that is why I have these metal shavings now?

i'm thinking that governors vary from different pump applications. the pump in that video is from a 3cyl. 993cc (cubic CENTIMETERS. yes, small). in that application, it probably needs a smaller rate of control (?). here is the way our governor assembly is set up...
if you look closely at the governor assembly in this picture you can see what's called the "leaf spring." tension is overcome by the governor sleeve when the flyweights spread apart due to centrifugal force. the faster it turns, the further apart they fly and the further the governor sleeve moves.
here's a side profile of the governor assembly.
