In my MB diesel I couldn't get it to crank over fast enough to catch even with a brand new battery when it dropped below 0 or -10*F. Switched from Rotella 15W40 to Synthetic Rotella 5W40 and she turned over MUCH faster, and started much easier for me! I was sold.

Now I'm out of school, I exclusively run Synthetic 5W40 in all my older diesels.

I usually switch to 5W30 for the cold winter months,
I mostly do short distance driving and the engine hardly ever gets up to
operating temp. Makes life alot easier for the engine under these conditions.
I put rotella 15/40 back in in the spring.

With my '92 I never used anything other than 15w40. However, I did notice after a while that Rotella 15w40 had the consistency of tar in cold temps, where Chevron Delo 400 of the same weight would still pour fairly well. Because of that I switched to Delo 400 15w40 and used it year-round.

My '92 would start in -20 deg. F. temps routinely if I forgot to plug in, although it sounded like crap and it's very hard on the engine. Best thing you can do even if you run full synthetic is to put a pad heater on the oil pan and use it.

Winter Oil

I use Delo 15 - 40 year round, but I have two pan heaters, a battery maintainer plus the block heater. I've started mine at -46F after plugging it in for 4 hours here in central Alaska.
