new clutch, hot clutch smell and noise
I got a new clutch put in my w250 2 weeks ago. It's a dual disc, with heavier springs and bigger wheel. It has a new bigger master cylinder put in about 2,000 miles ago. The throw out bearing is making noise even at an idle, and the clutch smells warm even after a 6 mile drive. I had to weld 2 nuts onto the adjuster to get enough throw in the pedal. The clutch only starts to engage at half way out instead of an inch or 2 off the floor. I have about 60 miles on the clutch, and the shop said the smell and noise will stop after it's broken in. Is this true or they trying to get out of warranty work?

Who's clutch? Best to contact the mfg first, imo. Something is definitely not right. My South Bend DD required no break in. When I asked Peter, he said toss it in and hammer down!

talked to the South Bend tech, told me since the bearing noise goes away when I push the clutch in it's nothin to directly worry about, and that they design the clutch to engage at the top. The only thing he didn't know about was the smell. Said drive it a little and keep him updated because on the DD Street he didn't think it should do that.

I have never had a DD clutch set up, but one time I had a 'new' throw out bearing only make noise when the cluitch pedal was out. I had the dealer change it as it was no good. I wouldnt think that the TO bearing should make noise at any time....but maybe DD's are different just my .02

Ahh, you got you a good clutch Yeah, they do engage pretty far out, but the 1st boosted 3rd gear burnout made me a believer! I've obliterated 6 315/70/17's so far. Done 4 200 footers in a row and the clutch was just loving it The smell is weird, maybe the installer left the stickers on the disks that say 'towards flywheel' and 'towards pressure plate'...

G1625< ha ha. love it man!! but after speaking with the other installer, he told me it was only a SD. The bid price I got from them was for a DD as that's what my previous clutch was, so now we're on to a whole new set o problems. haha.

I'll mention that to the guy. He's coming to check it out tomorrow. Do you think just replacing the clutch and stuff would do that? It didn't before. Thanks.

the pivot ball is supposed to have a nylon(i think nylon)shell on it. mine fell to pieces when i took it apart, I m pretty sure thats whats rattling on mine as I put in a new throwout bearing but not a new pivot ball.
