Need some advice

I have ran across a 4dr SWB 4x4 older dodge truck. Not sure of year but I would say around 80's.I no I've only seen one other and it was on here. This is a army truck from what I've been told.Has rebuilt 318 and is either ton or 3/4 ton. They claim low milage. It has rust in floorboard.Body is ok but I cant see any other rust.I want to buy this truck and rebuild it and maybe add a cummins eng.I can buy the truck for around $3k.Are these trucks that rare.I don't want to buy it and dump a bunch in it if it aint. Thanks for any help.

4 door crew cabs are not that rare but the good ones are getting difficult to locate. I have 3 in various conditions. Odometer in those trucks have 5 digits + the tenths. In the last 5 years or so I have seen a flood of the "low mileage" trucks with 20K or 30K miles that look to be in far poorer condition than the one I have with 70K miles. In other words you don't really know if it's 50K, 150K, 250K miles or what not unless it comes with a log book of the maintenance that was performed over the years. Base your value on the remaining quality and never the odometer miles.

Ten miles or ten-million miles makes no difference for a heart transplant recipient.

I'm not sure about how much location matters, but I picked my 81 crew short bed 4x4 for 750. I drove it on the trailer. No rust, minor body problems, and a broken windsheild. So to me the price sounds high. But that may be good for your area. If I were you I'd shop around a little.

Location matters a lot more than you may think. Southwest Tx, AZ, NM, southern CA are the best sources for our rust free truck parts. Southern coastal states have rust issues due to the salty sea air getting trapped in body cavities such as the roof. My crew cab truck cab is rust free and from southwest TX. My truck bed came from AZ. My donor frame is from FL and that FL body has roof rust.

I disagree with you on the rust issues in coastal states. I've had 10 vehicles in this state, all but 1 started their life here in louisiana, and the first one was the only one with rust issues, and it's only because the car suffered body damage and crappy repair work. As long as the paint is in good shape down here, there shouldn't be any problems. Not to say there is never any rust, as surface rust is somewhat common on frames and deep paint scratches, but not every vehicle has it and you seldom see rot, except in coastal counties and parishes. Also I'm not knocking TX, NM, AZ, and CA trucks, although I could see CA having similar issues as us. Those trucks are most likely in superior condition due to lack of salt and humidity.
