need feedback on 1992 12V

i'm considering buying this southern truck. 92, D250, LE, CTD, Automatic 3 speed (727 i'm guessing), 232K miles. 99% rust free. truck is in outstanding condition. not perfect but in real good shape.

the only other auto diesel i have had was a 89 W350CTD 12V. Dump truck. that truck also stock.

question is...i can remember stomping on the accelerator on the 89 and it would be very sluggish. it wasn't a get up a go truck by any means. (i had to sell it before i was able to do any mods). Can i expect the same/similar with this 92 250?

thanks all.

Truck will have the 518 with overdrive. They are much more sluggish than the new trucks but the 92 regardless will have lower gearing than the 89 (3.07s). Anyway a 3200 gov spring and a timing bump really makes the world of difference.

When I bought my 93 4wd clubcab donor truck...cummins auto and 4:10's. It scooted along pretty good. It was all stock too.

Turbo housing size makes a difference too.

Mine runs pretty darn strong with just a minimal cash outlay and some tweaks (star wheel, smoke screw and timing bump). $266 for the 4" Diamond Eye exhaust, $132 for the BD fuel pin and 3200 spring and $430 for the Bosch "190" injectors. Oh and $80 for the K&N filter.

Actually it ran really good even with the stock injectors. I didn't cut the collar off the fuel screw either but I got about 2/3 of a turn on it before it bottomed on the collar.

K&N filter is a on a turbo motor

the turbo will suck the oil off the filter gum the impeller and coat the cooler.

I would imagine if it was over oiled, which many people do, that would happen. They really require very little oil but I have seen them with oil running off of them.

Thanks all.
I ended up buying a 96 with 12V. Drove around in it, moves real well.

If someone cal clear my confusion...
Previous owner mentioned sliding fueling plate? But didn't mention the 3200 spring nor fuel pin.

Is there still unlocked HP?

Truck has a built auto 4spd trans, 4" exhuast, AFE intake.

Any feedback..much appreciated.

Angry Johnny, K&N also tends to let very fine dirt/dust particles in, which do grind down the turbo's impeller blades, and then find their way to the valves and cylinders. I'll have to dig and find that info. IIRC it was on a Mercedes Diesel forum. Someone had posted test results between papre filters and the K&N. Wix was rated one of the best. K&N rates worse than the lowest rated paper one.

JJ, The '96 is a 2nd gen. There may be more info in the 2nd gen part of the forum

I have heard this before. I appreciate the input. I don't operate off road or very dirty areas so this will do for now. It was only supposed to be a stop gap until I can design and build a true cold air system for it.

I have run a K&N since 2001, I guess all that bad stuff will happen when the 100% antifreeze catches fire ...Mark
