Mounting a new turbo
I know this has been covered here, but not recently so here goes. I bought a HX-35 off the classifieds here. I want to keep my Piers ported 16cm housing on my truck and lose the H1C compressor. I will then put the HX on to my housing. Would it be better to disconnect the compressor and slide it out of the housing and then slide the new one in? Or take off the whole assembly and put together my crossbred turbo and remount it? And the clincher, if I just remove the compressor, what holds it to the hot side? Is it those four bolts around the center? A supposed diesel mechanic said he could do it for me but it would take a day(5-6 hours) at $60 an hour. I knew that was junk. So thanks for your help guys.

So loosen the clamps for air take the oil lines off. Then take out the bolts connecting the hot side to the manifold. that will have the whole assembly off. The take the four bolts off that hold the two sides together. Carefully seperate the two sides with a large hammer and spin the impeller to make sureit isn't hanging on anyhting. seperate the other turbo pieces and cobble everything together and reinstall turbo on engine, and try to resell the leftovers to recoup the cost of the 35. Sound about right?

you may just want to throw the whole hx-35 on there with the 12cm wg to see what you think, with a 5speed you might just find you like it!... but i definately wouldn't get rid of it, it'd be nice to have that 12cm around if you want to try it.

Hose down the housing contact area with PB Blaster or JD 80 or something an hour before you start to disassemble. You may want to do it a day before also.
Remove the entire assembly.
Do not fully remove the 4 bolts that hold the pieces together. Just loosen them about 1/16" gap.
Spray again with your penetrant.
If you need to use a hammer to seperate the 2 pieces, start hitting so that the housing rotates in a clockwise/counterclockwise manner. This will break the pieces free with less chance of fin damage. Then you can use the hammer to go the direction to get them apart. (Be careful not to hit the compressor housing.)
As you start to knock the two apart, loosen the bolts a little more. (this keeps the housing from coming too far off of one side and damaging the fins.)
Keep loosening and seperating until the 2 pieces are apart.

Try the 12 first. Stock intercooled injectors are very hard-pressed to overcome the flow potential of a 12cm/wg housing. I think it should be agreed that the 16 is the 'best compromise' housing overall, but I don't think it should be considered the 'best' housing available. With a 5 speed, smaller is better, ESPECIALLY when towing. My larger, non-ic injectors have not outgrown the 12cm, even with a 60mm compressor, FWIW. It may be a little warmer on the top end while hotrodding than it was with the 18.5, but 99.9% of my driving is more enjoyable with the 12.
Good luck either way!

So if I was going to move up to EDMs within the next year, I would want to use the 16. If I stay with stock injectors though, I want to stick with the 12/wg thats on the 35, si?

Well, it depends on the nature of the EDMs. If you have a rowdy set built with tons of fuel in mind (who wouldn't ) the hx35 will be completely worthless regardless of exhaust housing.

Scheid makes a set that they call 60 horse injectors that I was thinking about. If those are gonna be too hot, I might just go with Bosch 190's but then I'm kind of limited. I had this conversation with Dave and he was the one that put me on to a 35 and the 60 horse injector plan. I figured I could take it to the bank. The theory being that if I had EDMs I could upgrade the turbo if I wanted more power, but that I would be at a pretty good power location with that setup.

Thats when we start looking at a valet switch right? I'll play around with housing size since I'll have two complete setups. I just need to figure out what to keep and what to sell to some ricer with delusions of grandeur. I just have to keep in mind that I'm looking for plenty of power to drag a trailer around, but I'm not drag racing or sled pulling. I have to cut myself off somewhere.
