Low fuel pressure light...

I was on the phone to a local Diesel truck shop and they talked about a low pressure light. They offer a kit to install a switch and small LED light so if your fuel pressure drops below 5 PSI you can shut it down with out any harm coming to your VE pump.

Anyone done this? They want $70 for the kit, sure I could source the parts for a lot less then that.

We did one a little while ago on a 95ctd. It's a piece of cake. I just ordered a pres switch from Napa that has a 1/8" pipe fitting and triggered where I wanted it to. I also got a little 1/2" diameter red light. I installed a needle valve like you would with a guage so the light woulden't flicker.

All told I bet it was only 30-40$

You could source it far less. All it is, is a pressure switch. Have 12v run to the switch, then the other lead going to your light, and make sure your light is grounded. The pressure setting of the pressure switch is what decides when your light goes on. My buddy uses a system like this for his water meth injection. He has it set at 4psi of boost to kick on (it's an 7.3 IDI, so he only does 9psi of boost total).

If you have not changed to a piston lift pump your light might be on most of the time. I think the max pressure for the diaphram pump is only 6PSI or so.

Where do I find a threaded port for the switch? Is there one on the filter housing or VE pump that I can use?

The rest should be pretty easy to do, Thanks for the info!!

Take out a banjo bolt and drill/tap it for 1/8" pipe

You could make your own much cheaper, all you need is an ordinary oil pressure switch, they are set to come on between 3-5 PSI, they are grounded so all you need to do is to install the pressure switch where it can see the fuel pressure, “T” inline with your fuel pressure gauge,

Take a (+) hot lead from a switched fuse and connect it through a 1000-ohm resistor and a LED of your choice (you can get LED’s with built in resistors from Radio Shack or most Stereo Shops), the opposite lead from the LED goes to the terminal of the pressure switch, the switch is grounded as soon as it is screwed into the engine, simple as that.

I could put it together quicker that it took my to type this post.

Here is an oil pressure switch you could use.

If it were me I would use a Hobbs switch instead, they are much more accurate.

Here is a similar switch that I used for my starter interlock,

And here is the Hobbs Switch that I replaced it with, they are much more reliable.

And yes you need to make sure you have a healthy fuel system or the light might be on most of the time.

FYI, I'd rather install a guage in the same spot.

I'd rather install a gauge, personally, because if a gauge quit working you would know it. I wouldn't trust a light like that to work when I need it to. lol
