watch the valves on #1. when they're loose, you're either at TDC of the compression stroke or TDC of the exhaust stroke. there's also a little timing pin hidden beneath the injection pump. it indexes a hole in the pump gear to hold the engine at TDC of the compression stroke so you can adjust the first set of valves. it can be a little hard to engage/disengage, so you may want to spray it with some penetrate. it should engage fairly smooth, but you may find that you have to turn the engine backwards and come back to it while keeping pressure on the pin until you feel it engage. my recommendation would be that once you engage the pin, disengage it so that you don't accidentally forget about it when you turn the engine over to adjust the next set of valves, thus potentially breaking the pin and maybe causing other problems when you crank the engine to start. that's what i've read from the book anyway.

here are a couple of articles to read through to help you out:

When both rockers are loose you are at TDC compression, if you were at TDC exhaust you would be in valve overlap where both rockers are tight. The way I set them is to bar the engine until #1 is in valve overlap, intake valve just starts to open as the exhaust valve closes. Then set#6 intake,#6 exhaust, #5 intake, #4 exhaust, #3 intake, #2 exhaust. I then bar the engine over 360 degrees until #6 comes into overlap. Then set #1 intake, #1 exhaust, #2 intake, #3 exhaust, #4 intake, #5 exhaust. Make sure you torque your locknuts as you go or there will usually be one you can't get a socket on.
