Should be done cold the heat can make a bit of difference on the clearance. Most folks set them 2 thou tighter than spec anyways.

long as the engine has had some time to equalize the heat you're good to go./

highway tractors come in off the road all the time direct for a a tune up. theres no time for sitting to cool off. time is money. I've had some so hot you couldn't actually touch the rockers or jakes you'd get burnt. so you kind of hover.

Every engine manufacturer I've seen says to set them cold BUT like 1-5-3-6-2-4 said, sometimes a cool down isn't an option. I set my 04's valves earlier this year when it was still pretty warm, just didn't have all night to let it cool down. I gave it a couple of hours to cool so wasn't at operating temp but still fairly warm. I've yet to have a problem and that was 20k kms ago. I will say that after setting them my fuel economy picked up a fair bit, like 50-100km a tank. Blew me away how much it would affect it.

I think our "cold" would be a lot colder than a shops "cold" I'd say anything less than operating conditions should be cool enough. Just stay consistent. On the small geometry of the B engine I bet the difference wouldn't be much. I like the warmer oil as it tends to be less of an issue getting feelers in there.

I'd set em warm. I've done a valve set on a machine smoking hot, then about a week later it was brought into the shop so i checked them after it had cooled off and none of them needed adjusting. Its just valves, one or two thou arent going to make a difference.

Cummins has a large tolerance on valve lash. .007-.015 on the intake, and .015-.030 on the exhaust. Get a set of feelers and a screw driver and set them. Its far from rocket science.
