Leaking Pump
Leaking Pump
My dad's VE pump is leaking on his truck, but we are not sure how to fix it. It is leaking from the place that I have been told is the AFC breather tube (a small rubber cap that has a short tube extending from it). It is located right below the AFC line where it connects to the top-rear of the pump. Can someone tell me what this is and possibly how to fix it so it does not leak? I'm not sure if the description makes perfect sense so feel free to ask, and I will try to clarify.
Thanks,
Dawson

That elbow is the vent for the AFC. Any fuel leaking from it comes from the fuel pin leaking into the chamber that the fuel cone and star wheel reside in. The fix is a new o-ring on the fuel pin. Pump disassembly is required.
It is an easy fix once you get the injection pump off the engine.
You are going to need some basic tools like Metric open and box end wrenches, 13mm manifold wrench, 3/8" metric socket set, Pin punch (a nail set works fine), (Optional Tubing wrench set), Bar Style Gear Puller from Auto Zone to push the pump shaft from the timing gear, also you are going to need to get a Bosch overhaul kit from your local pump repair shop.
It sounds complicated but the whole repair will cost about $30.00 if you have to buy the puller and some of the tools, the Bosch kit will be about $15.00 alone.

Here are some instructions on how to do it.

I thought it was possible to fix the leaking fuel pin without taking the pump off the truck? That seems odd when you can just pull the fuel pin from the top.

Sorry,
If fuel is leaking out of the AFC vent then there is fuel leaking past an o-ring that is buried deep inside the pump body, if you remove the tapered fuel pin under the diaphragm and look down the bore you will see a small pin that protrudes out at a 90* angle that rides on the taper this is the pin that is leaking, Like every other leak on this pump they are sealed by a simple o-ring but require some degree of disassembly to repair.
