Killing Electrical Gremlins
Killing Electrical Gremlins
Currently I've gutted most of my 91.5 engine compartment wiring and am trying to make sense of 2 PO's hack jobs with the fusible links and trailer brake wiring, not to mention trying to figure out what all these wires are that are run from the battery bypassing the fuse panel
The pics expired in the sticky so I have to ask: what is the solenoid on the fenderwell for, and should it have a hot wire on both side terminals?
that does not seem right to me....Also, right behind the battery there are 2 fusible links that exit the main harness, can anybody please tell me where these run? I'm guessing that they feed either the fuse panel or the pcm, I would like to put a real fuse on them...
So far, though, I have managed to relay all my lights (fog and driving, 3 sets
) , beef up my body grounds, and get rid of most of the ''áftermarket'' fuse box intrusions..any help here is appreciated!

I don't have a book for your truck but when I bought my truck the first thing I did was by the factory dodge manual for the year of my truck off of ebay. Cost was $100 but its payed for it's self over and over.
If it were me, I would simply re-wire it to suit myself.
The original factory wiring is a joke, in my opinion, hence all the many threads about fusible-link problems, various switch problems, various bad ground problems, etc., etc., etc.
Use plenty of BIG wire, plenty of terminal-blocks, and good aftermarket fuse-blocks, big toggle-switches; label EVERYTHING as you go.

In my book there are 2 relay's on the fender, 1 they call a fuel pump relay( i suspect its for the fuel shutdown soleniod) and the other is the starter relay.
Fuseable links are just hot wire that go to fuse panels and such. The links are there so that if they rub through before the fuse the truck does not burn to the ground. Figure out what color they are and you should be able to find out what size fuse would be needed to replace it. I would have to look a every diagram to find what each link is for. Good luck

right on, thanks, I have access to the 91.5 electrcal in the sticky but its page by page....I beleive the starting relay is actually mounted on the inner fender side, and that this solenoid is somehow connected to another trailer braking system
...
BK-that is pretty much my intention here, big wire and my own fuse-blocks...
anybody know where these two fusible links go?

They're both black, about 8 or 10 ga., and the links are black as well, and they (the links) are just before the connections at the battery terminal..these are much bigger than the coloured ones up on the fender..when I get a chance I will dig down into the harness a bit to try and see a bit more thanks

That sounds like the two fat wires that power the grid-heaters; do they have copper ring-terminals that connect to the battery-bolt ??
I didn't think those two wires had fusible-links, but I could be wrong.
That may be correct...they do not look like the other fusible links to me either but there is lettering on them that says 'fusible''...it will be pretty easy for me to put a meter on there tomorrow to find out...thanks
