As far as oil filters go, fleetgaurd makes the best oil filter for the $.
If my memory is good, I would say an LF 3552 is a good filter for less than $10.
K&N is a good air filter. They have a bad reputation becuase they are not installed properly into the air filter housing.

K&N is essentially the same filter as a Mobil1. Both built by the same people, both great filters, part numbers are very similar, both very spendy. There's some discussion about the filter media. It seems the K&N *may* give better flow, and Mobil1 *may* have slightly better filtering media...both are synthetic. So...if this is true...the K&N is better for performance and the Mobil1 is better for the long haul by filtering smaller particles.

I agree with Bill to a point....
I have to respectfully disagree with frostie about the K&Ns and improper install. I had silicone on the rubber insulator/band where it meets the hsouing, and silicone on the retaining nut's washer. Let it all sit for a day, then installed on truck. Still allowed dust through within 2K. I held it up and I could see blue sky through it, so I figured it light can come all the way through in large enough quantities for me to see, it is undoubtedly letting dirt in as well. Installed a paper filter, and no more dirt in intake of turbo. And Ironically, I didnt have to silicone it, either.
But, OTOH, I had absolutely ZERO problem with them in Colorado. Dust there is bigger particulates, more sandy, and the dust here is smaller particles- from loam and silt.

A turbocharger sucks much more air at idle than a big block gasser at WOT.
Same rule of thumb for dirtbikes/ATVs, only on a smaller scale. And I know a few motocross riders, and they DO tear into their engines quite often, for more than oil changes. If you make it through an entire season without replacing or rebuilding something, you aint running hard enough on the trails. They need the air more than the filtration. The K&N, et al, allow them to run a smaller filter and still meet their airflow needs.

Most of the problems people encounter with K&N air filters (although not trying to hijack, I thought this thread was about the oil filters ) are related to excessive cleaning and inadequate or improper oiling (stupid users), and of course the environment (street, offroad, part of the country, etc. as mentioned above). The K&N on my truck has not yet been cleaned by me, been oiled twice with the correct oil, and does not appear to be letting in any of these pinholes of light so often reported. Here is a pic of the turbo intake behind it. You be the judge:

YMMV.
