Junkyard Find

I found a getrag and 205 t-case in a cummins. Guy wants 450 bucks for everything. The trans is stuck in 5th gear and they broke the shifter off. Just wantin to know what you guys think about it.

Questions;
Why is it stuck in 5th, how easy is it to get that shifter out, and how much would it be to just rebuild the trans while its out?
and the T-case needs a gasket kit for sure.

Could be seized. If the guy ran it low on fluid and was cruising in 5th when everything finally got too hot.

I saw a Getrag that had gotten so hot it actually melted the aluminum shift forks......

That's a good deal...I need a T-case. I've been scouring the parts networks and I can't even find a good used T-case by itself for $450

GRAB IT! $350 for all the bearings, synchros, seals and gasket (eBay) in the trany and all gears and shafts are available. I rebuilt mine myself in my basement and its going on 3000 miles since the rebuild. I forget how much they want for a rebuilt one but, I'm sure its more than $1000 and you'll have less than that in the whole tranny and t-case. My $0.02.

Yep, saw that.
Best place to buy them from, IMO.

Locked in 5th could be as simple as the tranny got loose and the shifter got jammed between 2 gears, remove the shifter stub, take a large screwdriver and try to slide the shift rails back in place.

OR it could be ran dead dry on oil and siezed in 5th, at which point a simple re-bearing and seal kit is not likely to fix it.
If they run that dry, count on the mainshaft-gear cage bearings being fried, shafts and gears being galled, synchronizer hubs being blue from heat and even a cluster shaft being broken.

At any rate, snag ALL of it, flywheel, pressure plate, hydros, pedals, T-case, bellhousing, WIRING HARNESSES (how many people think of THOSE?), even the steering column if you can afford to.

Mark.
