IP getting really hot......

At times my IP gets really hot and the injector lines as well are too hot to touch. Also when it gets hot the idle drops a couple hundred rpms from when the IP is cool. What gives, why is it getting so hot? My last VE cummins didnt do this, the IP got warm like the engine but not hot.

Is the KSB on all the time? Is the fuel return restricted (my money's on this one)?

Disconnect fuel return line (smaller of the two) at rubber hose and run into a tin can at idle. Should get about 1 liter a minute I believe. This does not check the line to the tank but that is less likely. There is check/pressure valve at exit of IP that can stick.

I am not experiencing this problem; but for future reference, what is the correct part-number for that return-line bolt/valve and approximately how expensive is it ??

Can a bad or sticking one be salvaged ??

With so many of these trucks, a spare return-valve might come in handy.

Thanks.

I have got to agree with Wanna on the restriction in the return line. Mine clogged up about the same time that the shutdown solenoid failed. It looked like pieces of the plunger tip got into the banjo bolt. It doesn't take much as there is a very small hole in the bolt for the fuel to go through.

There is no valve in there, it's just an orifice with a filter screen. You can clean it out if necessary.

clean out the bango return line bolt and when was your fuel filter changed last and do you have after the lift pump fuel pressure gauge, cause if your lift pump isnt pump isnt working propoly and your getting bad pressure thats were your issue could be, also you have alot of mods so you could be starving you ip from fuel, get a piston pump or an electric pump

Ya know for awhile my shut off solenoid quit working. I had to kill it by letting out the clutch, but after about 3 weeks of that it just started working again. It may be trash in the screen or a clogged line. Where is the line and screen located at? So if the return is restricted does that mean I am running to high of fuel pressure or am I not getting enough fuel?

Remove the "banjo bolt" from the pump return line. The screen and orifice are part of the bolt. You should be able to backflush it with brake kleen or carb cleaner, no need to try to dig the screen out of there.
