Coolant Getting Really Hot

Ever since I put my TST on I've been able to pretty much peg my 1500* EGT gauge. Never worried much about it other than making sure I don't stay in it for more than about 5 secs. Well last week I was doing a 0-100mph run (EGT's don't peg until 70mph thanks to my wonderful stock tranny). During that run I happened to look down at the temp gauge and noticed it was sitting at 220 instead of the 190* it usually does. I immediately slowed down to 55, popped it in 3rd, and the temps came right back down. I popped the hood and looked for coolant leaking from the head and checked the oil level and all was well. Boost was at 40psi and the engine had been run for about 3 hours prior to this so it was well up to temps. Well ever since that day when I'm on it hard the temps rise and as soon as I let out they cool back down. Is it just from the EGT's getting so high that the motor can't physically can't keep it cool any longer? I've also noticed that my tranny is getting warmer than it should but that's probably my own fault. I'm wondering if my fan clutch isn't working as well as it should. I don't hear it kicking on near as much as I used to. I'm gonna swap out to a 180* t-stat from the 190* I've got in there and see if that helps. T-stat in there now is about 2 years old.

Yup. Did that in july and breather bottle has been moved for the last 3 years. I should also add that the only time it goes over 190* is when I'm at WOT doing 90+mph runs. Normal driving whether it be city or highway it sits at 185-190* like normal.

Go to the top of the page and look for a button called "User CP". Click on that and on the left hand side you'll see another button called "Edit Signature". Fill that in and voila. You have your truck info.

Mine get warm all the time if I'm pulling, but mines stock,so I'm not sure that there's a problem really,I don't have any gauge but the one that came in the truck, but I'd say it gets about that hot,but not any hotter...will your temps climb past 220?

Another crazy Idea,Have you upgraded your air intake? I know my log truck would get high EGT if the filter was plugged and that was a wet fish of a cat

Something is not right. It sounds like your either your cooling system or tranny may be to blame. Your truck has a liquid to liquid (coolant/tranny fluid heat exchanger) tranny cooler located just under and behind the turbo. Either your tranny is cooking and bringing the coolant up with it or the coolant is getting hot and the tranny fluid get some heat too (from the heat exchanger).

IMO I think you need to look into the cooling system. The tranny has the heat exchanger AND the fluid air cooler which is right next to the A/C condensor at the front of the truck. Reason I suspect your cooling system is that your coolant is getting hot first, and because of the heat exchanger, its bringing the tranny temp up with it.

I have noticed that mine has been doing the same thing lately. It will run up to the last white mark and then come back down. It does it alot when Im pulling a heavy load. My egt's haven't been that hot though when Im pulling. I wonder if I ought to get a new thermostat or maybe pull my radiator/intercooler and get it cleaned out? It may be normal or ok but it never used to do it and I don't like seeing it that hot.

Before you swap thermostats, pop yours out and test it in a pot of water on the stove with a thermometer. That will tell you if your thermostat is open when it should or not. If your thermostat acts normal then your problem lies elsewhere in the cooling system.
