Intercooling a 1989

Hey guys,

My dad is an over-the-road truck driver. Me and him had a discussion the other night about the prospects of putting an intercooler on my 1989. He said it would probably help keep my egt's on the low side and probably increase my hp and torque. Do you guys agree? With my setup (see sig), do you guys think adding an intercooler would add enough to compensate for the money, time, and trouble of putting the thing on it? If it would help, how much? I have seen some pics on here of guys that have intercooled their non-intercooled rides. So, chime in and help an uneducated 1st genner out. Thanks in advance.

Your dad is right. Hopefully Greg will chime in here, but with a late model Powerstroke intercooler I'd expect you to lose 200 degrees off the pyro.

Makes a big diffrence on the early trucks ... i have a complete set up with a hx35 and 16cm housing if your intrested... fits nice ...and you can use your stock grill with a little trimming.. im parting out my girlfriends truck (putting it back to stock ) just bought her a 96 ..

How are your numbers right now? It's a lot of fussing around, to be sure. You've got the AC condenser to deal with as well as maybe a tranny cooler, right? An intercooler definitely allowed me to become more reckless with the throttle and not have to be glued to the pyro, but I drove the truck for a long time without the IC and it was still a heck of a truck, just had to drive differently.

a/c condenser gone factory tranny cooler gone ... i have a vw oil cooler behind front bumper with a 1qt filter for the tranny ..works really good never seen tranny above 180* ... i cut three 3" holes where the lisence plate goes and run a plate in the winter so it can run a little warmer ... but just by touch from one side of the intercooler to the other is a big temp difference..the pump is maxed out with pod's ... with stock turbo would hit 1200* pretty easy since hx35 16cm 3" plumbing intercooler and 4" dp cant get it past 900* thats 300* difference so i would say just intercooler alone 200* sounds about right maybey more if you keep 18cm housing??

if your wanting to hot rod it then i would put one on it... if its your daily driver then i would spend the money on a 4" down pipe (got mine from source automotive) heat rap the pipe about a foot down (jegs 2" roll)and a bhaf from napa.. that shoud be good for about 100* or more wot ... porting the exghust manifold will help a little also mainly where the turbo flange is ...

Easiest to install would be a stock 1st gen intercooler. Couple simple brackets and something to hold the two legs of the IC are all that it takes to install on your nonIC'd core support. Then trim your grill, and cut the heck out of the core support for the IC.

Yes Sir, I recommend it. I have a 1992 and I put a bigger intercooler in it from Banks.

Thanks Rb .... it runs really well .. not as good as the one in my sig ... both trucks are limited by the tourqe converter.. my truck slips bad if i floor it from a dead stop it will flash to about 2500 rpm and it pretty much stays there till i hit about 90 then rpm will go up with speed ... i tend to like the ole 727 though very durable and keeps me from braking stuff i have launched this truck at 20lbs of boost numerous times with no ill ....my buddies got a 2000 ps 7.3 with a edge and some other goodies and it will flat out smoke it!! the funny thing is he still thinks power jokes are better than cummins ...they will never learn!!!
