Injector pump question
Injector pump question
Have a rebuilt pump ready to go in and need to resolve the debate about TDC... .does motor need to be set there when installing a "new to vehicle"pump? In other words, i am not installing the pump that was on this pickup after a rebuild, i had a spare redone to put on it.
Do not rotate the motor with the IP out, you run too much of a risk of the gear to jump teeth and throw off the timing. Just rotate the shaft on the IP to match where the slot if on the gear.

I have tried and tried to jump a tooth with just the pump off. After a lot of fidgeting, I decided it was impossible and took the front cover off.
I thought so also, but you really don't.When I replaced mine, I followed the FSM to the letter. That puts the woodruff key at 6 0'clock, which makes the likelihood of it falling or being pushed out really high. This has been thrashed out ad-nauseum on this forum. I had trouble getting my head around it (hard head), but was convinced. It seems to me that you or a friend watches the timing gear, while turning the key to 12 o'clock would be able to see if it jumps a tooth, IMHO...Mark
When I replaced my pump with a reman the key had been staked in the slot so it was tight. I installed it at TDC (slot at 5:30) since the pump was locked at TDC by the Reman person. If yours is just a used pump and not set at TDC then it doesn't matter what position you install it in as long as the key lines up. Your timing will be off however. Somewhere on the net or possibly on this forum there is a proceedure for setting the timing with a dial gauge but I've never done it.
If your pump is rebuilt professionally then it should be set at TDC and locked there. You should bar the engine over to TDC which will put the slot at about 5:30. Then make sure the key is tight in the slot on the pump, stake it if it isn't, and install the pump. Lightly tighten the nut on the shaft so you don't move anything off TDC then you can rotate the pump I think CCW from the back slightly to take up the gearlash and tighten tie mounting nuts. Back the timing pin out of engagement with the gear and then torque down the nut on the shaft. You pump is now set at TDC. Don't forget to loosen the pump locking screw and install the spacer there.
There is a video floating around on the internet and that is from Dodge detailing the pump R&R which is what I used to install my reman. I'll see if I can locate it and post a link.

Here is a link to the video.
it is in 3 parts and the part you want is part 3 I think. Reviewing the entire 3 parts is a good idea IMHO. The other 2 parts should be nearby on YouTube.
