HVLP springs

Hey everyone,

I am soon going to be installing a HVLP pump on my '93 engine. I've had it for quite a while now... just never got around to using it. Anywho, at some point I read that it's a good idea to have an extra spring or two on hand. So I've been cruising the internet looking for these springs. And I'm getting myself confused. Some people are buying a 10 pack of 54NL53 springs from Grainger while others are vehemently against this, saying they won't last. I have found two candidate springs on ebay, one being the 54NL53 while the other one has no part number. Both claim to be what I'm looking for. Let's add in that I've been reading write-ups on these pumps and learned there's a small bore vs large bore pump. How do I know what I have? Do I even need to worry about it? I bought my pump as a kit from THD some two and a half to three years ago at this point. I figured it was going to be plug and play. (I have one on my other truck... didn't know about spare springs when I installed that one. It was a smooth, minimal brain effort install.)

So can someone give me a kick in the right direction? I feel like I'm making mountains out of molehills over here.

Thank you!

If you buy a HVLP “kit”n from the Hungry Diesel or other companies, you do not need to worry about springs, small bore, large bore stuff, just install their kit.

If you want to buy a 2nd gen lift pump and fiddle around with it with Grainer springs, then you need to know what you are working with and the parts you will need to make it happen.

I assembled a small bore 26mm for my truck. I thought I had bought the 30mm. So I ordered the wrong springs. If you have a sack of springs and a full time fuel pressure gauge when it drops enough replace it. The factory style first gen pumps might max out at 5lbs. The HV pump is a 2nd gen style piston pump. You pull the spring out and toss it. Put in the lighter spring. Gavin Huke is selling them.

Doing this, swapping to a 3200rpm governor spring, and a 40hp fuel pin will make you smile a bunch. Won't hurt your fuel mileage.

Put your truck info in the description. I know things about the VE pump as far as tuning. Learning more.

Hungry diesel is either out of business or other problems. Measure the piston bore.

I see the original poster has a pump already. Needs the long studs and the spacer for the install. The metal fuel line isn't a "must."

If you didn't buy a real Daofeng/Cummins pump quality on the pump is up in the air. I will post this video. It shows how simple the install is. It is out of date a little

I just slapped my Hungry Diesel HVLP pump on my truck with out issues. I wouldn't worry about replacement springs immediately.

I think he has the high pressure Gen2 spring in there, that would blow the front seal.

When I spoke with him, he said it was good to go. No modification needed, I've been running it 3ish years with not problem.

The one you bought from Eric? Yep it was good to go. He swapped to the lower pressure spring. They all probably by the springs just like I did.

THD appears to be out of business. Website is shut down.
