Question V E Pump Springs ??

Before I dis-assemble another VE-pump, I am going to lay in a supply of most likely to need parts.

Since I often read of people finding the two big plunger-return springs to be broken, I intend to have a set on hand.

I have also read of replacing them with a high-RPM version; what would be the pros and cons of the high-RPM springs ??

Does anyone know the correct Bosch numbers for both the stock/O.E.M. springs and the high-RPM springs ??

In the exploded diagram in the sticky, it just shows the entire pump-head assembly as #50, with no further breakdown.

Thanks.

1 467 010 410 is for the high rpm springs.

Unless you are going to be winding the motor past 3200 RPM, all they will do is put more load on the cam plate and rollers. If it's not hot rod, use the stock return springs to make things easier on the pump.

Whether or not they are 'high rpm' springs is debateable. You call Scheid Diesel up and ask for a plunger return spring kit and that (1 467 010 410) is the only ones they carry and sell. My guess would be if you actually had a stock spring part number, it would supercede to the above part number. When I asked a pump guy at Scheid about them, he didn't know of any 'high rpm' springs. Same kit they use on any VE pump that comes in for rebuild.

Other parts to have on hand: seal kit of course, throttle shaft bushing, breakover spring, 366 spring and the plunger return spring kit. Kit = 2 springs, washers and oval plate.

Note: if a guy was/is to have a pump top off for R&D, whatever, on multiple occasions, you might consider having extra pump top gaskets/o-rings and fuel return banjo bolt washers on hand. I probly have 10 VE gasket kits with the all of them missing the top cover gasket and 2 return washers. Most of them are complete minus those two items. At $21 now for a kit, I said forget this, and priced the top cover gasket and return washers separately. About $1.65 each on both items. I had Scheid order me ten each. Part numbers of each are in the VE breakdown.

Why you ask? In my opinion, at minimum during a gov spring job or pump top R&R, I feel you should replace the top cover gasket and the two return washers. Now many have not had a problem reusing them, but I have. I'd rather replace it with new and not worry about it leaking. Sucks to have to do the job again, increasing the chances of dropping something (paint, dirt etc) into the pump's guts etc.

You get all of this with that part-number ??

Other than being obviously broken, what else indicates a need to change the springs or oval-plate ??

Other parts to have on hand: throttle shaft bushing
How does one determine the need to replace the bushing, rather than simply replace the O-ring ??

I, also, lay in extra of anything I might ever possibly need in the next three lifetimes; that way, I am sure to never ever ever need those particular items, but have an immediate need for the one thing I don't have (or can't find = I know it is somewhere on the property, but in which building/vehicle ???? )
