For you to do it, or pay a shop to do it for you?

Sure you could do it yourself for a few hundred dollars. A shop I suspect will more then likely charge you $1500 or more.

I replaced my oil cooler, water pump, thermostat and head gasket for right around 750.00. Did all the work myself and used Cummins gasket kit and New Cummins head bolts. About a solid days work if you work hard.

Just the gasket and bolts would run you about 350.00.

I spent right about $1700 doing it myself. $400 of that being machine work for the head (disassembly, hot tanking, magnafluxed, reassembly and a valve job), $530 was injector nozzle replacement by a local fuel injection shop (yes, I know that's expensive but I bit the bullet after a couple aftermarket company's promises weren't kept and 4 of the 6 injectors needed rebuilding regardless), about $240 for an upper engine gasket kit from Cummins and about another $500-$600 in misc. parts like head bolts and exh. manifold bolts plus the parts needed for the low pressure piston pump upgrade from Cummins. I have ALL of my receipts from the job.

You certainly don't have to upgrade the lift pump depending on your power goals. IIRC, the pump and all associated parts will total about $250 alone. Head bolts don't need replacing unless the gauge (comes with the gasket set from Cummins) says they're out of spec. They're stretch bolts but I didn't wanna take any chances. I bought exh. manifold bolts in case any my originals broke, even using penetrating oil.

I would a least take the head to a machine shop and have it check out. Don't cheap out if you can afford not to.

I am still fighting my head gasket after haveing it off the first time they milled .016 off it and replaced 2 valves got a top end gasket kit through puredieselpower.com ( which i do not advise!!!) Go through Cummins And i reused my head bolts ( which I also don't advise) Costed was around $450 for machine work. $150 for gasket kit and x amount for fluids. All for nothing because it never sealed right.

Pulled head off again for the 2nd time and went to Cummins Central Power in KC Missouri got a .010 thicker gasket $111 with discount, and new head bolts for I think $183 bucks also with discount. Put it all back together and she sealed up great no problems until 500 miles and it popped again. Now someone tell me what they think is still the problem. Lol FML

Did it blow in the same spot? If so your block could be etched from the first time.
