Well Greg I say leter eat. Check for straitness, put it back together. Then once the house is finished get another head (7mm) port polish oring......well you get the point. But thats just my thought.
Any way your really the only one that can make the final choice so good luck and NO PRESSURE

3 and poss 6, looks like it`s also cracked between the seats. I don`t have a ton of broken Cummins experience (OK I fortunately have none) but I`d think real hard about boltin that back on there, it`d be sucksville if ya had to do it 2X.

If you hadn't of pulled the head on account of the coolant issue, how many years would you have ran it without ever knowing about those little cracks ??

I would clean it up, slap on a fresh gasket, put timing and whatnot back to a more sensible level, and run it.

If you do have to go back into it, you now know all the tricks and have everything loosened up, such that it won't be near the chore as the first time.

I was thinking the same thing. Since the plan is to ultimately run a 7mm head, I think I'll go ahead and not put any $$ into this one. Anybody know the tolerances as far as straightness?

What do you take us for, a bunch of Cummins geeks?

No more that 0.0004" out in any 2" radius, no more than 0.012 overall.

I'd take the head and have it pressure tested. You were losing coolant someplace, coulda been a crack, not the gasket. You'll be a little upset if you slap it on there, go for a ride and the A/F is pushing out the overflow. I have a buddy would do it cheap (free?) for me, if you wanna go for a ride. He'll be in his shop near here most of the day friday.
Your choice, what ever you wanna do!

My head gasket (I hope that's all it is) is leaking in the front, which I hear is common, but I think I may be getting some oil in the water also. It may only be vapor, but when I stupidly put that stop leak in to "fix" my oil leaks the rubber gasket in the radiator cap swelled
Guess I'll be joining you on the misery train, except it hasn't been above freezing ay my place for three days now!
I need to start sourcing the head studs, thin injector washers and steel shim head gasket.

Well, Pete (PToombs) helped me get the head on and torqued down today. Still got a few hours of buttoning up before it runs, but the important part is done. Only a couple pics today Cylinders and pistons looked great and the new HG is quite a nice piece. Says Made in England on it, FWIW. All of my head bolts were in tolerance, the longest ones having the least stretch, oddly enough. More pics tomorrow and hopefully a vid of the startup.

Clean block:

Shiny +.020 gasket:

Well, this is still a gamble...it's entirely possible the head is toast and it will still leak. It's a 100 dollar risk I was willing to take. If it blows, it'll have to sit untill I can score another head....but looking at the cost of heads, I'll likely just save for a complete p-pump engine.

Assuming it works, I do wonder how it will run. I cleaned an easy .008 of crust from the head itself, plus the +.020 gasket...I'll be surprised if it starts If all goes well, I'm excited to see how it runs...

It was really tough doing that job with non-union help, but I managed!
I did get distracted several times by the wonderful scenery in the area!
I forgot how heavy those stupid heads are. Greg must have been all likkered up to pull it off himself! It went well, the head didn't look as bad in person as it did in the pics. I think it'll be ok.
