Headgasket, act I (with pics)

Well, it's 40 degrees and pouring rain. I have no garage and such a bad cold that I can't even talk. I have no help....so naturally, it seemed like the perfect time to dive into the headgasket project For those who haven't been following along with my follies, my t-stat stuck a couple weeks ago, presumably causing my HG to go. I was pushing a good bit of air into the system, blowing the coolant into the radiator overflow. It wouldn't leak too bad untill about 15psi...untill the other day when it blew all but a gallon out in 2 miles Since my work is somewhat seasonal, this is a real bad time for this. I was planning on getting a 7mm head and studs when the time came...as it stands, I'm going to have this head cleaned and decked and will install a +.020 gasket. I'm also going to scrape up the cash to get the injectors cleaned and popped. I really wish I could do more, but this thing needs to run, and soon Anyhoo, for those of you that like pics, I've got a bunch. Tell me what ya'll think of the HG and whatnot. Enjoy

The beginning:

Some stuff apart:

More stuff apart:

The head is absurdly heavy with the manifold on, especially with the height of a 4x4 and the rain and blah blah, quit whining, Greg

Ta-da!

Thanks for taking the time to worry with pics and a thread.

I always whine silently to myself when threads like this don't have pics, so I thought it'd be a bit hyppocritical to not include them. My once grey digi cam is now black, however, and Mrs. G1625S is not too terribly happy with me right now

And before you get to it, Haloman, I'm fully aware that trucks lacking single stacks are far more likely to lose a HG before 500,000 miles

Was that molten aluminum that I thought I saw in a couple of pics or am I being paranoid?

Nah, just weird chunks of coolant, oil and soot mixed together. The pistons look really quite good.

I'm no pro at reading HG's, I can't even see where it leaked...

From the looks of the valves, it looks like somthing was washing #2 syl.?????

The first pic of the piston, with the head off WOW!!!!!! it sure looked like that piston was fractured in several places!!!

And the #1 ext valve looks like it burnt???????

so have you found any of those FAMOUS inj hole cracks???????

Thanks for all the pic's............It alow us to fill you pain!

Good pics! I was doing the same job a week ago. But no digi camera. Sent my head in to get checked/milled, found too many cracks and now have a new 7mm head that I'll put on. I couldn't see where mine leaked also, couple spots were suspect but nothing obvious.

I'm guessing antifreeze

Nope, just carbon scale--little feathery light pieces like after a newspaper burns--I think it scraped off the head when I pulled it off the block.

Could be--I'll know by next week sometime....

Nope, but it's easy to see in the pics how the machining process gets the hole right into the valve seat!

Oh, and there's pain, to be sure
