I guess not then..........the pic makes it look like there is a chip out of the ext valve.........thing are looking real good for a....almost 500,000 head gasket job.

I think that's a result of an odd injector spray pattern (carbon booger making it spray stupid). That cylinder pahaps even running lean/hot based on the overall color.

If you'll notice, all the pistons present with a faint outline of where the combustion process "Shined" on the head as it came out of the piston bowl.

I really can't complain about this engine. It had 350,000 on it when I bought it a few years back. I've been running too much timing and too much boost for too long...it's funny that an overheat is what pushed it over the edge. I am gonna take the die grinder to the ports just for the halibut Looking back on the afternoon, I cannot express enough how heavy that sucker was--the ONLY thing that got that head out and down from that engine bay was sheer willpower! I probably won't see my head and injectors back untill after the new year, but I'll snap some pics of the cleanup process.

One of the cylinders (I'm suspecting #2) was blowing compression/boost into a coolant passage. It wouldn't leak untill about 15psi--if I whacked the throttle, I'd lose heat about 10 seconds later and the coolant catch can would be overflowing. When the engine wasn't running, a little probably leaked back into the cylinder and got blown out. I'm probably lucky I didn't hydraulic it.

I would guess the HG has been replaced before. It looks to be new(er) design, not old school 89.

I had a heck of a time getting my head to separate from the block. The cherry picker was lifting the weight of the engine up away from the truck then it popped up and scared me. I've learned to take the rubber hammer to the head to help separate it.

Hope you get it back together and running better than ever. Make sure you check your exhaut valves, they might have been damaged from the exhaust not exiting the truck in verticalish manner compared to the present horizontalish manner.

My lucky number is 4...

....cause that's the only injector bore that isn't cracked I can only assume this head is a very heavy paperweight now and I think I'm gonna put the project on the back burner untill I can score a 7mm head and some injectors for it. #3 is split all the way from the valve seat into the bore...well, you'll see in the pics. Come, walk with me in this, my moment of sorrow

Numero UNO:

Two-fer:

All that it can be #3!:

Four on the floor, Lord have mercy--no crack!

five not-so-alive:

Sixth in the row:

#3 again, money shot:

Just because it's cracked, doesn't mean it's thru. If you have the head pressure tested, it should show up right away if it's actually bad. I've seen these cracked like that, and not leak. On the other hand, it could be junk!
On 2nd perusal of the pics, #3 looks like it's cracked between the valves also. I can't see any spots on the gasket that look really bad, but it's hard to see.
Can you get the head off yer buddys engine? Or is it gone?

I say throw it on and run it. If it works, you have your truck back up and running while you hunt for a good deal on a head and injectors. If it doesn't work, you are out the cost of a gasket and your time.

I will 2nt that, look real close at #2........but if then cracks don't travel in the coolant areas...........Put it on and give your self some time for the right price head to come along

I have heard of many a people that have had big crack, ran it with out a problem!!!!!!!!!

I don't thing coolant runs between the valve and or injector holes........do they?

Sounds like a few of us will be doin' this, pretty soon! I'm sourcing parts as I'm typing, and will be going to work as soon as all are here. Fortunately, I have a bro-in-law with ALL the cool stuff in his shop to do this easily (including a gantry with an electric winch!)........sorry, had to say it! Hope your cold goes away soon, I just got rid of mine (couldn't give it away!).

Wow, I didn't expect this kind of response. Should I skip the machine shop since its a gamble anyway, or? The truck ran just like always before I took it apart...no missing or lack of power...hmmm, food for thought.

I would check the head for straightness, slap a new gasket on it..........Clean inj tips with brake cleaner and of course this is easy for me to say, it not my ride.......but if it was mine and i knew there was no coolant flowing under neath them cracks.............well as i just said
