Going from manual to auto tranny parts needed.
Going from manual to auto tranny parts needed.
After every thing I have read about the getrag,nv4500,nv5600 I am not sure I want any of them. The getrag and nv4500 arent build to handle fast/hard shifting with over 1000+ ft/lbs. The nv5600 in my area is gonna cost over 5000 grand to install. I deal with BD Power and they sell built auto trannys made for abuse. What things do I need to keep in mind to do the swap. Ill have buckets and a slap shifter but what else do i need. I know the injection pumps are different but how?ill need some kind of cooler, linkage to the pump, etc. Please inform me.
Injector pumps are the same, and are year dependent, not manual/ auto. You will need a bracket for the TPS if you decide to install one. If not, a switch to put it into OD will suffice, and may even be better.
You will need your driveline shortened, the stuff on the throttle bracket for the kickdown/ throttle valve stuff, and a different steering column if you want a column shift. Different pedal isnt mandatory, but would look more OEM. SOmeone else will undoubtedly know about the tranny corssmember.
ALso, flexplate and maybe flywheel adaptor, thogh I'm pretty sure they are the same.
Snd me the Getrag parts

I was told externaly the 518 and 47rh are the same. I need to know a few things to be certain however. Are the output splines the same? If so I should be able to use the driveshft from a 89-93 auto cummins correct? Does the shift linkage hook up the same if so I will swap colums if need be. Also would the trans crossmember be the same on the 518 as the 47rh? Any other info you guys might have would be great. For guys that have already done it please post your opinion of the 47rh. Thanks.
Also has anyone had luck putting an aftermarket shifter (b&m, etc.) in there truck, if so what model?

Check this out, something I wrote up a while ago about putting a 47RH in.

"TV bellcrank lever:
This is VERY important, the 94-95 lever is incorrect for the 1st gen application, won't travel correctly and the trans won't shift right. You will need to take the one off of your current A518 or 727 and put it on the trans going in the truck."
This was an auto truck to start with(i think). Mine is a getrag. I am curious about the kick-down cable from injection pump to trans. Should I just use a stock one from the 89-93 autos? Will my truck have all the linkage needed? Also I am going to purchase a tilt column to install at the same time. Do I need any other parts off the donor frame for the shift linkage to work? Any other info would be great.

Yes, you'll need a kick down cable, any 89 to 93 auto should work. Your throttle bracket should have the right spot for the cable to snap in. When you grab the tilt column also grab all of the shift linkage, pivot points, etc...
I'm not sure about the cross member, but you will need the trans mount from an automatic.
Ive done two of these conversions one from 518-NV4500 and one from Getrag to NV4500. The crossmember appears to be the same. The auto is 6 inches longer so driveline mods are a must. The t-case is different and its not as simple as replacing the input shaft on the np205. The input bearing is larger on the manual than on the automatic and the input shafts are not interchangable unless you can find a shaft with the correct spline and the right size bearing. A doner truck is the cheaper way to go here and the rest is not too bad a job. The flex plate will bolt on to the crank with no problem, just dont forget the retainer ring that goes over the flex plate before the bolts. You will also need a heat exchanger to keep it cool. It bolts on the engine below the exaust manifold.

Did you mean the trans crossmember was the same between all the trannys. For instance the auto and manual crossmembers were the exact same? That would save me some cash and search time. Also mine is a 2wd so no tansfer case to deal with.

Wow I never thought finding parts for this truck would be so stupid hard. I need to know if the parts from a gas job would work on my diesel. I know the frames were the same from what I have read and I would suspect the bodies are exactly the same, so I would think the other parts would be the same as well. The pieces in question are the: steering column, shift linkage from column/frame/trans, and trans crossmember. Also does anyone have manufacturer and pt# for the detent cable(shift down cable from injection pump to trans). Thanks for any help guys. Also would these parts have to be from a 89-93 D250/D350 or would the D150 parts work? Also is there other years of parts that would fit?
Yes the crossmembers appear the same from auto to standard but Im only sure on the 4x4s. One would think because the t-case just hangs off of the tranny with no other support that they should be the same as 2wd. I guess the only way to be sure is to call a wrecker. They have books that tell you that sort of thing. Just have to find one that will take the time to look it up and give you the info.
