Question Getrag Or Notrag (np205?)

I have heard that the getrag should be gotten rid of as soon as possible? Ive always been a fan of the NV4500. What would be the best manual tranny for the CTD 4x4? I want a tranny that can handle the cummins(with mods), towing, off-road, and smoking the rice-burners down at the local hang-out. Is there a better option? On another note, Is the NP205 a good choice? I have heard it praised in 4x4 mags, but that is behind a gasser. The Atlas looks awesome, but I just don't know. Any ideas?

It all depends on your budget...how much do you want to spend? There's a rag out there that's put 627HP to the rear wheels and there are 4500's that puked mainshafts with stock power. The 205 (especially in the 5-speed ctd's) is very tough and you likely won't be able to tax it without spending mega-bucks on the engine first. The 4500 is a good trans and shifts quite nicely when compared to the 'rag, but, IMO, I wouldn't touch your present setup untill 500+ RWHP, save for a clutch at about 350+RWHP.

I hear of many more NV4500s failing catastrophically, than Getrags.

I think the death of many Getrags can be attributed to kids trying to shift them like a Mustang or Nissan, instead of a truck; and, being more accustomed to 4-cylinder torque, the driver destroys the transmission.

In the last couple of months, I have heard of, locally----not internet, no less than four NV4500s running smooth and quiet, then just grenading themselves under power, just pulling, not shifting.

I have pulled 3 time with my getrag, the only weakness is the clutch. The getty doesn't like quick shifts (even though it can be done. Just ask the 06 Ferd owner what my license plate is ) and low rpms/high torque situations. Like hitting 5th at about 20 mph. And overfilling does help.

HTH,

Jon

Are there any good rebuild kits or upgrades for the Getrag? If money was no object what would you guys be using? What tranny, 205, CTD combo would be the best all around (ie 4x4, towing/ highway, and smoking the little hondas at the local drag) Is there a setup that allows you to shift harder and faster?

A dual disk is not going to help with shifting speed. A single disc clutch that can handle 3rd gear launches is the quickest way down the dragstrip. Use a trans oil like Redline MTL or Royal Purple Synchromax to help with shifting speed. It's still not a Honda 5 speed, though.

OK now i have always been a manual trans fan and i cant beleive i am saying this to you but if you want the best all around ........... this hurts ........ put your money in bulletproofing and auto trans the are sevral companies out there that can make them strong enough to take 800....900 + horses from a gasser the reason i say this is years of mud racing we finaly had to go auto to compete and went auto in all our street trucks because we got tried of changing clutches every other year because of the miles and the weights we use to pull there will be a thousand that disagree with me on this but through tug-a-wars, hill climbs, off road. trailer hauling, and strait line racing (in the mud) we have proven your money is better spent building an auto and learing throttle controll than a standard

All pickup standard transmissions should be shifted slow, deliberate and smooth. No matter if its a getrag, 4500, 5600, or the old sm 465 4 speed, They are truck trannys not sports car trannys. I finally have learned that in my 04.5' And have been alot happier with my nv5600. Good luck

Most definitely! If you want to drag race, get an automatic.

Wink Don't Want To Make This Another Manual Versus Automatic Conflict

BUT, among the many things about a manual transmission that I like, the ability to CONTROLLABLY move the vehicle an eighth-of-an-inch, forward or backward, without un-controllably lunging, is something I have never been able to accomplish with any automatic.

I hate them when it comes to backing into loading chutes or docks; there is no such thing as easing against the stops, with an automatic.
