Getrag to NP205 adaptor problem

Hey guys, I've just done a rebuild on the NP 205 in my '93 dually, no issues there, it all went together without a hitch.......until I tried putting the last piece on, namely the t-case to tranny adaptor. It's sitting proud against the case, and having done some measuring with calipers, it appears that the input bearing is sitting too far up.

The gears line up perfectly looking in through the PTO opening, the input bearing and snap ring are the same ones that were already in there.....the only thing that is different, is that I'm using RTV rather than gaskets. Is this the issue? Unfortunately I tossed the gasket pieces as I scraped them off, but is this particular gasket essential for the clearance needed?
