Not to bad of a price, for the NV4500
Thats where I got my NV4500 with the fully splined 5th gear main shaft. I got a great price and they treated my right.

I think the low revving stock spring had a fair bit to do with many 'rags biting it earlier rather than later. Especially with a load on, the operator has no choice but to lug the heck out of the tranny, which is where the getrag really falls apart, literally and figuratively! I can shift a lot faster and smoother if the engine is wound up past 2900.
You missed the point for most of us getting the Cummins in the first place, it was to have an engine that would pull at low RPM's... If i wanted to wind one up all the time, i would have chosen a different diesel or a gasser!

2,900 IS low RPM. It's destructive to lug a diesel.

You obviously haven't driven many 5-speed Macksidines(I know it probably ain't spelled right).

Shift from fourth to fifth and RPM drop from 1700 to about 300.

I remember reading somewhere in these forums recently where they said the Cummins was designed run at full throttle right off idle.

I think cummins are good to run all day at rated rpm, which is 22 or 2300 rpm. I don't think you will get your million miles at 2900, maybe only 500,000. I think the getrag is a functiona trans but with bad gear spread and noisy. Not surprised it is in a Dodge.

Who said anything about "lugging" the engine??? Of the ten plus diesels i have around here none of them get lugged, but they don't need to be run WFO either.

I bought the Cummins because it pulls good from low RPM's without "lugging", and without destroying itself doing so too.

Have you ever run heavy equipment with this same diesel????? You don't turn them 2,900 in a dozer or a farm tractor and they are happy all long every day pulling at low RPM's....

The reason or reasons others have for choosing which vehicle/drivetrain they purchace is of no concern to me, so if I ''missed the point'', I assure you, it was intentional Engines in other applications and of other displacements making power at 300 RPM's also don't serve any prupose in this discussion. As for the 5.9 in the Dodge application, the rated horsepower comes at 2500 RPM's with peak torque at 1700. The stock gov spring does NOT FULL-FUEL all the way to 2500...if it did, I likely wouldn't have bought the 3200 spring. Shifting at 2500 (max HP) brings the next gear into play right at 1700 (max TQ) for me, which is ideal as far as I'm concerned. I've never driven a 'rag that rattles above 1600 and even Cummins recommends against putting ALL the coals to the engine below torque peak. Having said this (mostly for my own benefit, I imagine...) I will agree that the Getrag is marginal at best when compared with other reasonable options, but that from a cost-only perspective, money to swap in a different tranny would be best spent elsewhere when talking about 650 and less horsepower at the CRANK.
