Is the Getrag that Bad?

It seems that alot the getrag gets alot flack for just about everything. I give mine all kinds of abuse and it doesn't give me any promblems. It shifts just quick enough except for 2-3 doesn't go quick enough for me when trying to acclerate rapidly.

My dad has a 93' 4x4 that he tows with fairly heavy with and he hasn't had any promblems with the tranny.

So i guess my question is. What fails in these guys or what known issues are there. I know we overfill ours by one quart when we change oil but what else is there?

The most common failure is the input shaft bearing, that's why we overfill them.

The synchros are pretty weak.

I know the synchros on my dads 93' are kinda noisy so i kind see that.
Is the input shaft only a issue when the trucks are turned up?

No, it's a lubrication issue.

I have seen dozens of these trucks with Getrags that have had nothing done except drive the thunder out of them and still going strong; then, I have seen a few dozen lose 5th gear and ruin the transmission such that it had to be replaced--yes Getrags, not NV4500's. I drove one home, around 1200 miles, with 5th gear gone. It never made a strange noise and came all the way home, just no over-drive. It had to be replaced.

I just got one back from the shop.

New bearing/synchro kit, one new fork, and a speedometer gear plus labor = $573

I think they have a nv 4500 and just don't know it yet. Thats the reason they have no problems. Hey I know better, I own one. A getrag, that is, get u a rag ready your going to need it.
