Funky Brake Issues

Hey All, I went to put new pads on the old girl and noticed some issues.
1) the rotor has cracks all over, and needs replaced, is the rotor part of the hub or can the be seperated?
2)my outside pad is almost metal to metal while my inside pad is barely worn, What is the issue?
Thanks to all
Wheelo

I don't know about 4x4's if the rotors are a one piece deal or not. As for the outer pad being worn down and the inner almost untouched, I'd say the inner pad became bound or wedged on the caliper/brake bracket.

The rotors are separate from the hubs, at least on 4wds.

The unequal pad wear is due to the caliper sticking on the caliper mount. Clean and lubricate the caliper mount as shown in the sticky on brake service.

Those thermal cracks can usually be removed with the normal turning on a lathe.

As far as the uneven pad wear, be sure the caliper slide points are well lubricated with a high-temp anti-seize or the like.

The wear on the outside pad only usually indicates that the in board pad is not sliding and could be hung up on a rough spot. If the caliper was not sliding there would not be any where on the outside pad. Unless the caliper was sliding when you applied the brakes and not sliding back when you released the brakes. But like earlier suggested clean the sliding surfaces and grease everything properly. That should fix the uneven wear. That may also be what caused your heat cracks in the rotor. I would just get a new rotor instead of trying to cut the cracks out of the old one but that is just my .02.

Thanks so much guys! I picked up a new rotor for 65 bucks, the old one was rusting through as well. and i gotta put new wheel bearings and such in her any ways. so i figured it was time to repair and replace a few things... how difficult is it to seperate the hub from the rotor?... i imagine just drive the studs out and use an air chisle to seperate?
Thanks much!

The pads usually leave a wear mark on the caliper support.
The pad gets stuck in the wear spot and wont slide on the support.
If you have a welder, put a dab of weld on the worn spot to fill
the groove and then grind it down level again. With the wear groove
gone the pad can slide across the support again without getting hug up in the groove.

once you pop the studs out, the pieces usually just come apart... I dont think an air chisel will be necessary at all...

I use a brass drift and a BFH to get them out. Then back in with an Air hammer from the back side with lube. MAKE SURE YOU TORQ THE WHEELS BACK ON. AND THEN AFTER DRIVING IT AROUND THE BLOCK RETORQ THEM!!!!!

me too , drew them back in with the lugs (thread them on with the flat facing the hub, i.e. backwards) as well BUT only do this if`n yer replacing the lug nuts as they`ll prob get fubar`ed pretty good in the process, I also place a large flat washer thats lubed up with anti-sieze under the lug nut to prevent galling of the hub assy..
heavy outer pad wear is probably due to non-sliding sliders like BC said.
