Question fuel problems

I have a 92 dodge w350, it has been running fine , but I changed the fuel filter. I did it just like I always have for the past several years. However, It would run fine and then just go dead. I reprimed the filter and bled the air out and then it would run for a while and then die. I thought it could be the lift pump so I replaced that and I thought I had it fixed and then it ran for about an hour just as pretty as you please and then when I get out on the road it goes dead and will not crank. I just can not figure it out. Any suggestions? Also I have heard that the later model injection pumps can burn up if there is a fuel issue , what about these older models? Each time I primed the pump it ran fine .

You most likely disturbed the fuel heater seal, and now it has air. The fuel heater is sandwiched between the fuel filter and the cylinder head. There is a squared edge O ring seal that is common to fail when servicing the fuel filter. You need to remove the filter. The threaded part that the filter screws on to also goes through the fuel heater to hold it on. Just unthread it out of the head, and the fuel heater will come off.

Thank you. Forgive a dumb question, If I take the fuel heater off how do I tighten it up ? And where do I get the o ring seal? Thanks again.

The treaded fitting that the filter screws to is two sided. the threads that you see when you take your filter off are on the lower side, than there is a hex to tighten the fitting. on the top side of the hex is a longer threaded tube that goes through the heater and into the head. Remove the fitting to get the heater off. The seal is available at several places, cummins, case, dodge... I don't have the number but I'm sure it's posted on this site somewhere.

Just noticed you said "dies and will not crank". ... in that case I'd go with a major electrical disconnect stopping your fuel via the FSS and then preventing your cranking the engine. There's a large connector branching off your (+) cable a foot or so from the battery. Pull it apart and see that it's righteous. That circuit runs a lot of the harness and could be stopping you even with a good fuel system.
