Thanks man,

Well I'm going to run it like it is for another tank to see if its consistantly bad. At the moment I think my bad mpg is from winter fuel (I understand its good for 2mpg loss), 4x4 driving from our recent snowfall and spinning the tires in 2wd in snow.

I didn't see any major fuel leaks, although I think my VE is weeping a bit. It felt slimy on the back side (closest to the block), but not wet with vitamin D.

My mileage went down last tank, and I thought it was just because my new turbo whistle (can't keep my foot out of it), but in the winter I do warm it up, and I have that cool down timer now....

Fuel Heater Leaking.

I did away with the fuel heater on my truck years ago. The gasket would leak at the most unopertune times, vacations and etc. Nothing I liked more was changing a gasket at the side if the road. I tried new gaskets and retighting several times and just got tired of the whole process.

I went to Cummins and got a filter adapter and put it in. I use Power Service in the white bottle duing the winter and Power Service in the gray bottle during the summer. The way I look at it is if the fuel in the tank gells up during the winter then the fuel heater isn't going to help much.

The spud was less than $15.00 USD, might be a little more now. CECO#:3925954 (adapter, filter head).

Just my 2 cents worth.

Fuel gelling in the tank and wax crystals starting to form in the filter are two different things. The filter clogging will stop you long before fuel gels in the tank. Anyone who drives a CTD in sub-zero temps would be well advised to keep that heater, leaking or not.
