fuel leak

on my way out tonight i saw a big leak under my buddies 89 D250. i called him and told him to check it and he found it was fuel. hopfully its just a leaking fitting or line, but from where it was positioned it looks like to could be the VE.

how many different things could leak on a VE?

That's hard to say, plate on engine side, throttle shaft, injection head(as mine did) or any where else there is an oring or gasket.

its definatly leaking from the pump. its hard to say exactly where. we cant really see the other side of it. it seems like we are going to need to remove the pump to find the leak. how involved is pump R/R? could a couple of novice mechanics pull it off? i guess this would be a good time to have an FSM.

the leak is pretty bad. at startup idle its a slow intermittent drip, one stab of the go pedal and it becomes a fast consistent drip as soon as the R's drop off.

thanks for your input guys.

to start with you need the cummins spesel wrench or a S wrench to remove the lower bolt on the pump!

so with a telescoping mirror i was able to conclude that the leak is coming from between the pump housing and the housing that all of the injector lines go into.

does that help any? my freind is a broke fool and is willing to attempt to fix it himself. worst case scenario it becomes a core on a reman.

thanks.

i take it the "injection head" is the housing i was referring to with all the injector lines coming from it?

Yeah, if he wants to try to screw it up worse I suppose there's no harm in it. Get the reseal kit (bgilbert has posted the p/n several times) and look over the rebuild thread from the French VW forum.
