fuel heater
I changed my fuel heater gasket today. I don't think it was plugged in. It seems that it draws power from the same wire as the FSS. Is this right? Or did someone Jerry-rig this thing? I pulled the wires apart and re-connected just the FSS til I could find out. I am going to have to get the fuel dried off everything and run some new wires.
That NAPA oil filter gasket was right. I ended up grinding a 3/8 flat washer til it was thin enough to get into the slots on the tube and grabbing it with vice grips to turn it. I also turned it a 1/4 turn the wrong way til I realized it had to go the same way as the filter.

According to the 1993 manual it gets its power from the fuel solenoid but not at the fuel solenoid. Again this is from the 1993 manual. The other side goes to ground. Mike

Ok, mine was tied to the FSS, but closer to the plug along the side of the motor there. Things should be dried out enough I can seal the wires back up. I didn't think they would have it set up so it is powered all the time. Thanks.

It is powered any time the key is on, but the element only draws power and makes heat when the fuel is cold. Above 50 degrees it's practically shut off.

OK. I got it hooked back up tonight. I don't know how long it will stay, the clip is broken so the plug just slides on and off. I'll have to fix it right (dual wall shrink tubing and all) later, I just had to get it together seeing as it's supposed to be down below 0 here again this week.

The blue wire that runs to the FSS has a splice in it back around the area of the fuel filter. One side goes to the heater, the other to the FSS. There is a couple ground wires on a manifold bolt to the rear of the grid heaters. One of them runs into the harness and splices with the ground for the heater, and a ground that runs into the harness plug.
Do you have the proper plug? I think there is a spare plug in my harness, I have no idea what it does. Everything else is accounted for. It wasn't the heater plug, because the leads on it are too short to get to hang down below the filter where I found the spare plug.
