Ferd cummins swap a success!!!

Well I got off the phone with the customer today, Has a few lil issues, Like the donor engine has a sketchy lift pump and it loses prime, gonna take a lift pump, and The return line either needs a check valve, or submerged in the fuel in the tank to keep prime in the system. Other than that, he put 250 miles on the truck and has used less than a 1/2 tank of fuel. This is a 3/4 ton ferd highboy with 4:11 gears. I installed the engine, and tranny from a 93 Dodge 3/4 ton truck in this ol girl. Came out awesome, had to rebuild his 5 speed donor tranny, and find a t case, but that wasnt hard. Had to completely build a hydraulic system for the clutch, That took a few trys til I got the geometry down. Its nice now, You can run the clutch with 1 hand and its a big 13" clutch in there. Used a willwood master cylinder and a speedway slave cylinder.

I had to hand make brackets for the intercooler, new radiator mounts, lower radiator adaptor tube, cross member, and t case shifter mount, but all in all customer is happy, and I got paid!!

I did have a lot of time with my dremel trimming the grill to clear the intercooler, and I had to completely re engineer the hood latch assy, but that wasnt hard really.

Right on! Now assuming all the little things ya had to do it wasn't a diesel to begin with? Or is it a pre-super duty?

Yes, this was a 76 Highboy. So I had to basically make it a diesel truck.

Heres a few pictures.

LOL, it is the ORIGINAL Super Duty.

Them old Highboys are why I love my 97 so much, it reminds me of them in so many ways.

LOL, NOT my truck! Im useing all the extra running gear parts I got from the 93 dodge to install the 4bt in my 78 powerwagon. All I need to buy is an intercooler, and an exhaust manifold, and that swap is gonna be started,,,,,,,when I get the Dad-in-laws 73 340 4 speed Cuda done.

Entire engine and tranny were out of a 93 Dodge, so i used the G360, rebuilt that for him with a new top plate since the thing fel into no mans land a few times.

As for the T case, I used on out of a 78 3/4 ton Ferd that dropped to the drivers side so the driveshaft mated back up. Advanced adapters had an adapter I needed, I just had to modify the tranny case to allow the t case shifter clearance where the upper shift rod came out. Really easy deal there, about 20 minutes with a good die grinder burr. Also had to cut about 1/4" off the output shaft of the tranny.

All in all nothing too terrible, and he called me this weekend and he is getting 21 MPG with 4:11 gears.

Not too shabby.

Very cool I havent checked out AA in quite some time. There are a couple adaptors that open new routes there.
