Swapped in yes, easily, thats debatable. The engine has its own ECM so you should be able to run it all by itself. You'll have to get yourself a good wiring diagram and figure out what you do and don't need.

Is there something wrong with the 92's engine? Personally after dealing with the problems I've had with my 24valve I would not swap it into a truck that has a perfectly good 12valve with plenty of potential.

I'd P-pump it before I installed it.. Sell the vp to help with cost of the parts to do the conversion.. Not sure what you are getting with the engine.. but it might cost more to get the engine running using the VP, than the conversion.. if you need an ECM, some of the position sensor... and other stuff will add up quick...
If its a good deal I'd pick up the engine..

Not a good plan. The 98.5'-02' 24-valve was probably the least realiable of all the Cummins' Dodge has used.

Sorry but i am going to disagree with u.........

If i only had "24v cummins" to choose from, it sure as @$%%! wouldn't be a common rail! (03 and up)

The only thing wrong with a 24v(99-02) eng as fare as reliability gos, is not changing there fuel filter often enough.(every 8 to 10,000 miles) causing a marginal lift pump, to over heat trying to push thru the dirty filter, and burn out, causing the inj pump to over heat and also burn out! burn out short out....what ever you what to call it!

I have seen lift pump to go for over a 100,000 miles and injection pump to go for over 200,000!

NO, there was not too many of that when, nearly that far, but, those that keep the filters change did!

Yes i have replace lift pumps and inj pump on these models like they were candy!

I would not be afraid to own a 24v (98.5 to 2002)...... a common rail, on the ether hand, in the oil field, in stock forum, can, and do, melt piston!!!!!

OK, off my soap box!

If you can get it for cheap get it, and sell it, and make your 1st gen sing, with the extra cash!

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. I'd much rather have a common rail . After owning several of both style's, and watching the repairs that take place everyday in our service department, I'd make the statement the common rail is more reliable. VP44 and lift pump replacement put A LOT of money in our pocket over the years. I'd venture to say less than 10% of the 98-02 24-valve's I sold new are still running their original VP44. The only thing we do to Common rail engine's is replace injectors. Mainly on the one's that don't get the filters changed. I have several customers running CR engine's well over 100k miles with no problems, and a couple over 200k, and one about to break the 300k mark, all with nothing done to them.
