engine problems

ok i have a problem with my truck i hope you guys can help me with. i have read a bunch of forums but cant seem to find anything that would help me. my problem is the engine seems to be missing at idle but seems fine when you step on the accelorator. however, past half throttle it does it a lot worse, with a loss of power. about 2months ago my kill switch went out and i have been having to kill the engine manually. then 2 weeks ago the switch started working again. after a few days of it working i went to start the truck and i couldnt get it to start. tried a couple of times to get it to start and then it finally fired up. so let it warm up a bit then left for home, on the way i hit 55mph and it started missing and i couldnt get the truck to go any faster. dropped back down to 40mph and didnt notice it so i went the last 5 miles home doing 40. when i got home i talked to my neighbor who knows about deisels more then i do. he said it sounded like one of the injectors was out. since i was planning on getting new injectors, i ordered some pod's. installed them today. did what directions said. got it started and cracked the injectors (each one spurted fuel) then tightend them. shut it off. started it back up and drove it, but still had same problem as before. turned it off. did some searching on here, found something that said it might be the fuel filter. had a new one and it needed to be changed so i changed it. went to start it, it lit and ran for about 10 seconds really rough then died. now i cant get it started again. hope you guys can help me on this. I havent updated my sig yet, but i have put in an ATS trans with tourq converter, opened up the air box, and put in pod's. have not tweaked the pump yet. thanks for any help you guys can give me.

check the shutdown solenoid, it may not be getting a good connection, or the little rubber stopper could have come off, spring went soft etc. Take it out and see what's going on. If the rubber on the end degrades and falls off you certainly don't need any crap getting into your injector pump.

Good luck

It could be a weak lift pump or leaky supply lines. It does sound like a fuel starvation problem to me.

If you changed the fuel filter, you need to prime the filter with fuel. There is a bleed screw on the top of the filter I think and a lever to work to get the air out of the system. That's why it ran for 10 seconds and then quit. Now you have to prime the filter, and bleed the air out of the injector lines again.

If it still misses I would do a compression check and if that's ok, have the injector pump checked.

I'd agree that it sounds like a fuel starvation problem and based on your intermittent shutoff problem, I'd suspect the shut-off solonoid on the pump. You might remove it and take the plunger out, replace it less the plunger and see if that fixes your problem. You will have to manually shut it off if you do this but if it fixed the miss, you know where your problem is.

Good luck,

sound like a lift pump or air. check all the fuel hose for cracks and proper fit from the tank to the pump

an update on the situation. i blead out the fuel filter and repeated the injector bleeding. that got it to start. but its still not running right. will check for cracks in fuel line tomorrow. might try and pull out the kill selinoid too, but man it dont look too easy to do. for any of you who have done it, how did you get it out? dosnt seem like there is any room to get a wrench in there.

i used a wrench it was tight but it fit also the fuel tank has 2 small 90 bends on top with seals in them they can let air in if worn or broke

Replaceing the fuel lines from tank to pump should be routine maintenance when the truck gets this old. Try that before you get frustrated and overtighten one of the steel injector lines. Is it hard to start after sitting?

another update. took out the kill switch and removed plunger and spring. tip of plunger was not degrated. started it up and it still did the same thing. dang so my next step is to check the lift pump and if thats alright then replace fuel lines from the tank to the truck. thanks for all your help so far guys. any more advice is still apricated.
